How about choosing just one tune of this year as your favourite.

It's hard, I've changed my mind twice already and am trying to resist the temptation of listing the alternative choices.

But just one. Give it a go. Mine?

Dry Your Eyes by The Streets

(Yeah, and I'll probably want to change my choice tomorrow).

Fennesz's "Circassian," though there are TONS who can aspire to this. There are at least three that are just below this one on the rung, but I'll resist saying them...

Now, I didn't start this topic, so I have no problems adding more. "My Way is to You" by Paul Kelly, "The Sweat Descends" by Les Savy Fav, "Spit on It" by The Icarus Line, "Primitive (The Way I Treat You) by Ambulence, Ltd., "C'Mon, C'Mon" by Von Bondies, "Nicotine Bomb" by Mission of Burma, "she will only bring you happiness" by mclusky, and "Little Red Shoes" by Loretta Lynn. There may be more, but this is plenty to chew on.

Thanks for that, I got some things to go and hunt down and listen to.

Gotta agree with the rat by the Walkmen, especially after I saw them do it live. Reptilia by the strokes is a gem as well and I love Such great heights by the postal service.

Van Lear Rose by Loretta Lynn. Best song from the best album of the year so far IMO.

"What To Do With Michael" The Candy Butchers

This track has been on every mix CD I have made so far this year, so as we reach the midpoint of the year, I have to give it the nod so far.

Contenders, though, include:

"Anecdote" Ambulance Ltd.
"Take Me Out" Franz Ferdinand
"Portland, Oregon" Loretta Lynn
"Toto Dies" Nellie Mckay
"One Plus One" David Mead
"The World At Large" Modest Mouse
"Miracle Drug" A.C. Newman
"New Watch" The Red Thread
"Take Your Mama" Scissor Sisters
"The Rest Of My Life" Sloan
"C'Mon C'mon" The Von Bondies
"The Rat" The Walkmen
"Maps" Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Wilco's "The Late Greats" is probably going to find its way onto the list soon and Kanye West's "We Don't Care" keeps setting up residence in my head. All in all, it's been a great first half of the year.

Now Playing: "The Sound Of Settling" Death Cab for Cutie Transatlanticism (Barsuk)

I just heard this song for the first time the other day and was absolutely stunned. I had kind of written the YYY's off as another hyped up garage band, but this, I hope, distinguishes them as something very different. I think the Jigga Man said it best, "(this tune is just) So necessurry, Ma."

I'm just sorry to say, St. Ides Heaven, that as much I like the single, the rest of the album left me cold.

I think I'll follow your lead and hope this means good things for the future, though. Anybody who records a single that good is worth watching.

Now Playing: NBC's Wimbeldon coverage

Linn, in hopes of hearing more along the lines of "Maps," I downloaded "Fever to Tell" the other night, and I'll definitely second your notion that it disappoints. No other track really even comes close. It's almost hard to believe that "Maps" and the rest of the album are the product of the same band. Oh well, I guess the sweet isn't as sweet without the bitter, eh?

After being let down by the album, I was reading some reviews to see if anyone else held congruent feelings, and I think Eric Carr at Pitchfork really hit it on the head:

"Still, for proof that the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, at their core, make a better band than they do runway trendsetters, one need look no further than Fever to Tell's singular true moment of clarity-- a tune of such moving grace I can scarcely believe they're responsible for it-- "Maps". Though the song is sadly in a class by itself on this record (it would take about two seconds to call roll for the tunes that even come close), absolutely everything falls into place here."

Smiler Jesus Walks by Kanye West is a great song!!

Even though this is his first cd, I think that he is one of the best song writers!!

As much as I like "Maps", it does sound a bit like The Walkmen, doesn't it? Maybe it's just me...

Anyway, I don't know how long this will hold, my summer jam thus far is "Dip It Low" by Christina Milian. Dig the non-Indian Eastern influence.

I also like:
"Desparecere" Deerhoof
"Little House of Savages" The Walkmen
"Holla" Ghostface
"Pony Ride" Bumblebeez 81

I thought Action Pact and Fever To Tell were released last year.

To update and expand on my former post (so this post isn't just wasted space):

1: "The Rat" by The Walkmen (Someone should rescue those drums from Matt Barrick)
2: "Alone In Kyoto" by Air (I'm probably cheating here, but it was released on Talkie Walkie, so I think it counts)
3: "Seventeen Years" by Ratatat (I love that waltzing beat)
4: "Mike Mills" by Air
5: "Peace Attack" by Sonic Youth
6: "Float On" by Modest Mouse
7: "Jacqueline" by Franz Ferdinand
8: "Love and Some Verses" by Iron & Wine (It has an expansive, jam feel to it, and Sam Beam's singing is kinda romantic to me)
9: "Surfing On A Rocket" by Air
10: "I Love You Golden Blue" by Sonic Youth
Honorable Mention: "Dripping Dream" by Sonic Youth (It reminds me of "Tuff Gnarl" and how Thurston Moore can still take stupid lyrics and make them seem super-cool)
Another Honorable Mention: "My Immigrant Mom Talks Funny!" by David Cross

Mea Culpa, Monheim. Action Pact and Fever to Tell are both 2003 releases.

I also left off "Could Well Be In" from The Streets. That albums tends to slip my mind on a track to track basis as 1) I usually listen to it in its entiretly and 2) I don't put it on many mixes since The Streets seem to be an acquired taste.

Now Playing: "Suite: Part I: Prayer And Meditation: Day / Part II: Peace And After / Part III: Prayer And Meditation: Evening / Part IV: Affirmation / Part V: Prayer And Meditation: 4 A.M." John Coltrane The Classic Quartet: Complete Impulse! Studio Recordings (Impulse!)

Ha, excepting the guitar breakdown (which actually reminds me of Xiu Xiu's "I Love the Valley OH!"), "Maps" could very well be The Walkmen ft. Karen O. Good point, Matt.
