That's my next project, I'll probably start on it in the next few weeks.
I'll check out the link you sent me. Looking forward!
wow, i haven't been over here in a while, but it's good to see the old thread alive and kicking! i've listened to a fair amount of this and i think it's cool, particularly the how most of you just want to get your stuff out, like with CC or even just myspace, etc.
amd no post here is complete without a link, of course! my new band, CARILLONS, just finished an album and a performance video in the middle of the desert. check it out, say hi!
i've been told the full album (or at least the full version of "Voodka" a couple others) will be up on our website on this thursday when it "goes live":
Hey, JohnnyNotToScale, I've been working on a longer piece like you were talking about... and I've come up with a rough sketch of a piece that's about 16 minutes long. I haven't decided what synths/instruments/textures I want to use on the final mix, but I've got a rough demo up on my Myspace as "Quartet." Check it out and let me know what you think.
Hmmmm... the file's too big. I'll find a new way to get it out there.
Dungeonmaster - my half-serious stoner sludge-metal side project. Our songs narrate the mythology of the moonwitch, an ungodly creature that descends from the full moon and feeds on the blood of junkies in order to get her fix. I'm actually quite proud of my production on this one, as ridiculous as it may be.
Also--If you don't have a subwoofer, aren't familiar with black sabbath, and/or have never toked up before, you probably won't appreciate this.
Here's a couple of tracks my brother and I have been working on. Neither of them have vocals or drums (we're looking for people to provide us with these services!) and they're far from perfect but let me know what you think. Any changes you would make? Anything you would make shorter or longer? Think it's just plain bad? I'll take any feedback.
I like those demos! I've been wanting to drum for a band for a while (and I do vox for lil slugger), but alas, I'm in Colorado...
What I would change writing wise would be:
I would go in more of a This Heat/Chrome direction - incorporating maybe some recordings of machine noise, and in general fucking up the structures a bit to go off in random-ish directions. I would also incorporate some more complicated rhythms - polyrhythms, polymeter... Maybe some free jazz-ish elements, brass, etc.
hey everyone, i know i already posted my band's stuff on the previous page, but i was hoping i'd maybe get some feedback. if there are no comments though, i'm not going to press the issue any further. but thanks for listening anyway.
my band is called imperial china and our EP called Methods: is up on our myspace page (www.myspace.com/imperialchina).
also, and more importantly, anybody else in the dc area? this town is a little slim on postpunk/electronic/noise stuff, and i'd love to find some other bands with whom to play shows. also, if you're in the dc area, i'd love to hear what you've got going on...i go to shows a lot.
Not too bad, DCFan. I think if you guys had a bigger presence on vocals it would pretty compelling. With all of the energy in the music, the vocals honestly don't quite live up to it. Maybe bring the vocals up in the mix? Maybe let the singer know (if you're not him) that he's not bad and he just needs to belt it out with a little more confidence.
Also, like I mentioned above you guys do a pretty good job of establishing a high energy feel, but you may be losing some steam with the long intros. I found myself wanting you to get to it!
Those are my suggestions, but don't take it like I'm being critical. You guys are doing a lot of things right. Keep it up - it sounds good.

sans success, thanks a lot for the honest feedback! i respect almost everyone on this board (including you and your posts), so i appreciate that. i actually am the singer...we're definitely predominantly instrumental, and it's for a couple reasons. personally, i like more instrumental music, and two, i don't necessarily have a great voice, and we didn't want to add a singer. so i've resorted to a more speak-shout approach, which hopefully works to a large extent.
i definitely know what you mean about the long intros, and really, the EP is kind of a sampling of everything we do (in terms of the songs we picked for the EP). i mean, for an EP, it's really long (almost 25 minutes). over the past 3-4 months, we've definitely tried be a little more focused in our songwriting. not that i don't like the songs on our EP. like i said, they're a good sampling of everything we do. but recently, we've really tried to stick to more singular ideas rather than going too far off the original course of the song.
again, thanks again for listening and the feedback. i really appreciate it, and i'm glad you like it.
Actually I think your voice is fine. I'd just personally like it if there were a little more emphasis on the vocals is all. Maybe just a little louder. As Frank Black was told before he was in Pixies: "scream it like you hate the bitch"

hahaha, fair enough...that's a really great quote from frank black. again, i really appreciate the feedback!
IFEL, I'll be totally honest with you, and I'm not saying this to be mean: it sounds like you guys are trying way to hard to be "indie". That guitar on the first track? It sounds exactly like Beirut. The singing? It sounds like hundreds of other "indie" bands. I think you guys need to try and find a sound of your own. Branch out. Try some other instruments or sounds. Make your compositions more adventurous. Don't be afraid to try a unique vocal approach. Start listening to all kinds of music. I think one of the best ways to be a good musician is to really listen to lots and lots of stuff. Again, I'm not being critical just for the hell of it: if you want to make it somewhere you're gonna need a sound of your own.
That being said, from what I can tell you're pretty young. Young bands are typically pretty derivative because kids are either afraid to try their own stuff or just aren't yet good enough at their craft. Keep it up and I'm sure you'll improve drastically. Again, just don't get caught up trying to sound like everyone else.

Thanks for the honest criticism. It's true, we're all in high school and we haven't been a band for very long. And just to clear things up a little, the guitar in the first track isn't guitar its a ukalale.

Yeah, I suppose it is a ukalale.
Again, I'm not being critical just to rip on what you've got. You're no doubt gonna spend a couple of years writing stuff that sounds a little derivative and is (generally) not all that good. The stuff I'm working on right now is the same way. It's just the way it is when you start out. Just keep trying new things and you'll get there.
