i have guildwars, and although not having different races and skill trees is kinda annoying, the gameplay is good and it would be an awsome game if my internet wasn't dialup...MEH!!

World of Warcraft
10 times better in my opinion except for the cost issue. If you have the cash, go for it.

Pros -
Huge Environment
Great End Game PvP or PvE
Diverse Gear, Raids, and Class Makeup
Awesome interface, action bars, and mods
Cons -
Very slow leveling process
Can get repetetive
Monthly Fee

Guild Wars
Not as good as World of Warcraft

Pros -
Two Class Character feature
Easy to find groups for quests
Pretty good graphics
Cons -
Extremely quick leveling process
Pvp sucks, take it or leave it
No gear diversity
From what I hear, not much to end game

Keep in mind....
I have played WoW for a LOT longer than GW. I have a 60 druid and a 43 warlock on skullcrusher and have been playing almost since release and i am still playing to this day. GW i didnt play much, because after playing WoW i couldnt see myself becomming even remotely interested in GW. I hope this helps you make a decision, but i would like to hear an opinion in favor of guild wars if i was you.

Imo WoW is just a waste of money.... but onto the comparison(sp?).
Warning: Contains my opinion... If that even matters.
Note to WoW Fanatics that might see this: Don't get mad and email me. Go gank another one.
Note to GW Fanatics that might see this: Punch a pillow
Disclaimer: In no way do I condone violence and/or the brutal murders of pillows and newbies... Just n00bs.
Smiler

World of Warcraft
Pros
Big enviroment
Differant races
Skill trees (lol)
....
Cons
Slow lvling
Story is largely based on lore (if there is a story?)
Gets repetitive (ex: lvl grinding)
No option for fast travel (What? I'm lazy and it's a nice option.)
Mostly group based
Not-so-good graphics for the subscription fee
and the loathesome subscription fee.

Guild Wars
Pros
Strong focus on strategy
No subsciption fees
Awesome graphics
Stand-alone games released every 6 months
.......
Idk what to call this catagory?
Henchmen (don't need the real people all the time)
Hero system (basically customizable henchmen)
Hardcore and casual gamer community (I'm hardcore...lol that sounds bad)
End game is good (depends largely on what Guild Wars game)
PvP is more refined in GW than in WoW (OMG! Acronyms)
.......
Cons
There are some nuts but what game doesnt have those? (o rly? ya rly! no wai!!!)
Idk what to put here
My review is somewhat biased
............
Lol, I forgot. The lvl 20 cap is there for a reason, same with the vast amount of skills and only 8 skill slots. It's strategy based gameplay not lvl based. Btw I've seen a lvl 2 beat a lvl 20, it's all based on skill usage.

But I did play both games. (gots me a lvl 25 on WoW, I don't play it anymore and I don't intend to play it again) Yeah imo Blizzard is milking the people that play WoW... Meh.

My opinions end here____ not here --- but here____
lol just had to. Have a nice day and I might come again...

Big Grin

Funny.

Question, Schwarzwind. Do you only play Online RPGs on the PC or do you also play console RPG's? If so, which ones?

The one thing that Guild Wars DEFINITELY betters WoW is the pvp. How can you say its a con?? also the leveling system is better fast and only to lvl 20 as you dont have to spend all your time leveling up and sittng on your arse all day, instead you can become better at the game pvp - wise etc.

I have no strong hate for WoW, but some parts of it annoy me. So yeah, I'd suggest both games for their different playing styles and gameplay. A lot of people say GW PvE sucks a lot and doesn't compare to WoW, and just let me say now... GW IS A MOSTLY PVP-ORIENTED GAME, ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A PVE FREAK LIKE WOW!! Whew, now that thats off my chest...

Guild Wars:

Pros:
1000+ Skills - don't tell me that isn't impressive
Ten totally different professions - not much of a pro since most GW and WoW professions and classes are copies of each other (Elementalist/Mage or Shaman, Warrior/Warrior (OMFG!), Ranger/Hunter, Assassin/Rogue, Monk/Priest, Dervish/Paladin, Necromancer/Warlock, Ritualist/Druid). GW's Mesmer and Paragon are the ones that are pretty much unique.
Several complex PvP styles - there's Guild vs Guild, Alliance Battles, Competitive Missions, Team Arenas, Heroes' Ascent, and much more
Less grinding - grinding is what pisses me off the most. On GW, you only grind when farming or need just that one extra hundred experience to level up
No fee - yup... That in itself is awesome
Great graphics - the places and things in the game look awesome
Instant Town traveling - no need for those Hippogriffs, Wyverns and Griffons in GW. All you need is a mouse!
Better quest variety - the quests can range from "Bring this thing to this guy" to "Get about twenty people back to this town without dying" to "Fight through several areas of monsters and beat one big boss"

Cons:
Short PvE - after beating a campaign, all you do is either PvP or farm to get more items for PvP :P
One race - yup, one race and they are all the same except for professions
Bad armor and weapon variety - everyone has the same cool-looking armors, only different by their colors. The weapons are all basically the same depending on what you're doing
Instanced areas - you can't meet people outside of towns
No healing items - only way to heal is to wait after a fight and let it regenerate (which is very fast compared to other MMORPGs actually) or have the party's Monk or Ritualist heal you
Low Level cap - lvl 20... yup

World of Warcraft:

Pros:
Skill trees - allows you to spam a skill repeatedly as you can have it twice on your skill bar, even though one is relatively weaker
Large areas to explore - PvE is AMAZING in WoW. Plus you can meet a lot of interesting people on the way to wherever you're going
Dungeons - one of the few instanced places in WoW, but the rewards of dungeons are freakishly awesome
Lore - there is no 'definite' storyline, but every single race has its background and history, making several storylines which make your head boggle. But Blizz made it so that there's even history of certain plants in the game
Several races - ie the Night Elves, Blood Elves, Draenei, Humans, Orcs, Trolls, Tauren, Gnomes, Undead and Dwarves. This is a BIG advantage to character customization
Awesome armor and weapon variety - Almost NO ONE looks the same on WoW. The armors are all very unique looking, along with weapons

Cons:
Grinding - this is one of the only few ways to level in WoW. That, and questing... and almost all WoW quests REQUIRE grinding
Bad PvP - what is there to be special about WoW PvP? Battlegrounds? GW has Battlegrounds times 50
Few skills - there are about 20 skills for each class, so there's not a lot of variety
Immature community - not to insult you WoW players, but the WoW community is horrible. Larger yes, but horrible. First day playing WoW, I got called noob about twenty times... by people who were lvls 2-10

I won't make you or persuade you to buy either. They are both awesome games and you choose which you'd like. If you're still confused here are quick summaries of both...

Guild Wars is fast-paced and is almost an Action/Adventure video game had not there been millions of players playing alongside you. It is PvP-oriented as I've said. It also focuses more on strategy and micromanaging, not on the better items or equipment. The eight skill slots allow you to customize to whatever you want to be, healer, tank, interrupter, anything. A lot of the skills also synchronize with each other, like for example... the Elementalist skills Shatterstone and Vapor Blade. Alone, they do decent damage, but when put together in a Guild Wars tactic called 'spiking' you can deliver a 250+ damage payload in an instant. This is the most unique and best part of Guild Wars.

World of Warcraft definitely deserves its title as the world's most popular MMORPG. That doesn't mean it's better than Guild Wars and other MMORPGs though. World of Warcraft is VERY PvE-oriented. The large landscapes, the several monsters and animals roaming them, the storylines and backgrounds of races and characters, the many activities to do, and many other things are part of World of Warcraft's genius. I guess the simplest thing to say about World of Warcraft is... wow. ;P

Wow what a change of attitude there Light4494 Cool

A moment ago you were bashing WoW and now you're lavishing it with praise. You almost make me wanna go buy GW.

Yeah, to further reiterate, WoW is better at PvE while GW is quite strong at PvP. I think the graphics on GW is much better too, currently anyway. WoW is the quintessential RPG.

Happy Gaming!

LOL. Its because after my first post, I had an argument with my friend (the one who played WoW) and he persuaded me to play WoW more in depth. I got a whole new perspective and decided instead bashing WoW, I'd praise it for what its good at, and instead of worshiping GW, I'd reveal its cons and be fair to both games. Wink

I did check out the website and they got some pretty detailed info on the different chapters and which one to get if you're new to the game. I also liked the description of the professions and how they listed the attributes and stuff. Cool.

Thanks for taking my suggestion on where to find GW info. There's a reason ArenaNet lists Guild Wars Guru as one of their best fansites.

Well, you've probably made your decision and bought the game already, but I think I'll just add my 2 cents, just because.

Now, I'm not one for MMORPG games. I think they're slow, boring, and the fighting is all about pushing the right button at the right time. I personally like more interactive RPGs (Fable, Oblivion, Diablo II, etc.) where you actually have to click something when you want to attack rather than just sit there and press 1, 5, Ctrl + 5, etc.

But as for WoW and GW, here are my opinions on both, combined with other peoples' experiences with them.

WoW:
Arguably one of the best MMORPGs of all time. People love it, celebrities apparently play it (or get paid to play it so they can say they do), and its universe is huge. For me, I really can't play WoW for more than 15 minutes before I start to get incredibly bored. All of my friends who adore the game (they've "quit" playing 3 times only to go back to it) say it's pretty boring in the early game and the grinding is a pain to do, but they play it for the PvP. When you're sitting on a Ventrilo server listening to your friends talk about what they're doing while in a PvP match, WoW almost sounds exciting. But then I watch them play a round or two and it bores me to tears. WoW is very time consuming. So you'd have to be prepared to spend a lot of time leveling, grinding for gear, rep, all that good stuff. So if you want to play WoW, you have the $15 a month to play it, and you have a lot of time to kill, then go for it.

In terms of GW, I've only played it once. It seemed interesting enough and after about an hour or something I was level 8 (out of 20). I didn't know what I was doing but there were some people who were willing to help you out. The lack of constant human contact in the game can get to you, so you might want to consider having some friends play with you, if you decide to play it. That way you can form groups and do all of the instance quests together. I can't say anything about the PvP since I never tried it. But the graphics were pretty good.

Another couple of games you might look into are Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) or EVE Online.

I have a couple of friends who enjoy DAoC and think that its PvP is the best thing since porn. There's three different factions (as opposed to 2 in WoW) and they have a shared battleground that involves some massive PvP battles (storming keeps, siege weapons, all that kind of stuff). The leveling is kind of slow, but not as slow as WoW (I think there's a system there where you can get to level 20 instantly or something like that... and you get a free level every few days up to a certain level... I think it's 40???). Gear grinding isn't AS important in DAoC, but it can help.

With EVE Online, if you like something different, you can do whatever suits your fancy. Go PvE and kill some pirates for money, work the interplanetary market and become a freight runner, PvP and build the best ship you can and destroy all who get in your way, run a corporation and make a lot of money. People on EVE call it the "intelligent MMORPG." I did the one month trial and EVE was the MMORPG I ALMOST broke down and paid a monthly subscription fee for (I don't like the idea of paying monthly for games). But in the end, EVE involves a lot of travelling (although you have a warp drive). So if you like sci-fi stuff, then perhaps EVE can be your game. There is one huge drawback to EVE and that's the fact that there is only 1 server, it's PvP, and if you go into a "low-security zone" you run the risk of getting killed in under a second. But if you like economics, politics, and thinking, then EVE would be your route.

So there you go. Happy hunting and good gaming.

TES IV: Oblivion was revolutionary in the RPG genre in the sense that it incorporated an FPS dynamic to hitting your enemy. You manually target your enemy, you either hit or miss. Whether you hit or miss is entirely your fault (or your controller's haha).

The traditional RPG fighting system involves the right sequencing of skills; your efficiency at killing the enemy is determined by the right combination AND sequence of skills you use. Hitting or missing is already taken into account by the game's hidden algorithm of random numbers. Yes, you can pretty much boil this down to luck. But this is also where you try to raise your stats.

What I don't believe is that one genre attracts more "intelligent" gamers than the other. I think skilled FPS are straight shooters (almost instinctive), while skilled RPG gamers are excellent at deductive skills. Both groups are smart in their own right.

From what I observed, people are usually into one thing or the other; rarely both. My older brother has always liked FPS and RTS. He finds RPG's boring. While I don't hate FPS and RTS, I really prefer RPG's.

On another note, RPG fans often love the medieval motif. RTS and FPS are often contemporary or futuristic.
