I have no strong hate for WoW, but some parts of it annoy me. So yeah, I'd suggest both games for their different playing styles and gameplay. A lot of people say GW PvE sucks a lot and doesn't compare to WoW, and just let me say now... GW IS A MOSTLY PVP-ORIENTED GAME, ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A PVE FREAK LIKE WOW!! Whew, now that thats off my chest...
Guild Wars:
Pros:
1000+ Skills - don't tell me that isn't impressive
Ten totally different professions - not much of a pro since most GW and WoW professions and classes are copies of each other (Elementalist/Mage or Shaman, Warrior/Warrior (OMFG!), Ranger/Hunter, Assassin/Rogue, Monk/Priest, Dervish/Paladin, Necromancer/Warlock, Ritualist/Druid). GW's Mesmer and Paragon are the ones that are pretty much unique.
Several complex PvP styles - there's Guild vs Guild, Alliance Battles, Competitive Missions, Team Arenas, Heroes' Ascent, and much more
Less grinding - grinding is what pisses me off the most. On GW, you only grind when farming or need just that one extra hundred experience to level up
No fee - yup... That in itself is awesome
Great graphics - the places and things in the game look awesome
Instant Town traveling - no need for those Hippogriffs, Wyverns and Griffons in GW. All you need is a mouse!
Better quest variety - the quests can range from "Bring this thing to this guy" to "Get about twenty people back to this town without dying" to "Fight through several areas of monsters and beat one big boss"
Cons:
Short PvE - after beating a campaign, all you do is either PvP or farm to get more items for PvP :P
One race - yup, one race and they are all the same except for professions
Bad armor and weapon variety - everyone has the same cool-looking armors, only different by their colors. The weapons are all basically the same depending on what you're doing
Instanced areas - you can't meet people outside of towns
No healing items - only way to heal is to wait after a fight and let it regenerate (which is very fast compared to other MMORPGs actually) or have the party's Monk or Ritualist heal you
Low Level cap - lvl 20... yup
World of Warcraft:
Pros:
Skill trees - allows you to spam a skill repeatedly as you can have it twice on your skill bar, even though one is relatively weaker
Large areas to explore - PvE is AMAZING in WoW. Plus you can meet a lot of interesting people on the way to wherever you're going
Dungeons - one of the few instanced places in WoW, but the rewards of dungeons are freakishly awesome
Lore - there is no 'definite' storyline, but every single race has its background and history, making several storylines which make your head boggle. But Blizz made it so that there's even history of certain plants in the game
Several races - ie the Night Elves, Blood Elves, Draenei, Humans, Orcs, Trolls, Tauren, Gnomes, Undead and Dwarves. This is a BIG advantage to character customization
Awesome armor and weapon variety - Almost NO ONE looks the same on WoW. The armors are all very unique looking, along with weapons
Cons:
Grinding - this is one of the only few ways to level in WoW. That, and questing... and almost all WoW quests REQUIRE grinding
Bad PvP - what is there to be special about WoW PvP? Battlegrounds? GW has Battlegrounds times 50
Few skills - there are about 20 skills for each class, so there's not a lot of variety
Immature community - not to insult you WoW players, but the WoW community is horrible. Larger yes, but horrible. First day playing WoW, I got called noob about twenty times... by people who were lvls 2-10
I won't make you or persuade you to buy either. They are both awesome games and you choose which you'd like. If you're still confused here are quick summaries of both...
Guild Wars is fast-paced and is almost an Action/Adventure video game had not there been millions of players playing alongside you. It is PvP-oriented as I've said. It also focuses more on strategy and micromanaging, not on the better items or equipment. The eight skill slots allow you to customize to whatever you want to be, healer, tank, interrupter, anything. A lot of the skills also synchronize with each other, like for example... the Elementalist skills Shatterstone and Vapor Blade. Alone, they do decent damage, but when put together in a Guild Wars tactic called 'spiking' you can deliver a 250+ damage payload in an instant. This is the most unique and best part of Guild Wars.
World of Warcraft definitely deserves its title as the world's most popular MMORPG. That doesn't mean it's better than Guild Wars and other MMORPGs though. World of Warcraft is VERY PvE-oriented. The large landscapes, the several monsters and animals roaming them, the storylines and backgrounds of races and characters, the many activities to do, and many other things are part of World of Warcraft's genius. I guess the simplest thing to say about World of Warcraft is... wow. ;P
