Okay, my brother would like to relive his childhood with an old space game he used to play back in the early 90's. I grilled him for information for a while but I couldn't find it. Hoping someone here can at the least point me somewhere that might be the right direction.

Here is allllll the info he can remember:
He played it in the early 90's (at most 94).
It was a turn based strategy.
It was played on one computer.
It had space exploration and conquest.
The galaxy was 3D and could be rotated.
The players each had one spaceship throughout the game.
The players were in control of the spaceships during combat.
The combat was real time.
There were different types of resources you received from planets.
There may have been only one type of resource per planet (he is unsure on that one, but he is sure that there were variations in planets).
There was no fog of war.
Each player started with only one planet.
At least 2 players (possibly more).
You could only go from planet to planet (like in Masters of Orion).
You wouldn't know what kind of resources the planet had until you explored it.
It is possible that there were resources on the side of the screen for commands or for resource overview.
It would enter a new screen when combat began.
You would start at opposite sides of the screen in battles.
He thinks that MMO is a good comparison for the graphics except this game was simpler, there wasn't as much detail on the ships (more complex than a triangle though).
The colors of the start were coded to the controler (one color for each player, and a color for neutral stars).
He thinks that it wasn't a red, green, white layout that would change to reflect which player's turn it was.
He doesn't remember there being any background while rotating the galaxy.
He doesn't remember if there was a currency.
He was certain that the game was on a computer but he can't remember which platform.
------
And there you go Smiler.
Any reply would be appreciated.

Hmmm.... I'm sure there were a few like this. Ask him these follow up questions and I may be able to find out the answer if it is the game I am thinking of...

When you entered the individual fights were there sometimes a star in the center that you could crash into, and would have a gravity field around it, that would pull you in slightly??

If the battles played out like asteroids kind of style, both people playing a little ship and the whole battlefield was the screen, that's the game I am thinking this is. If it was 'in cockpit' split screen for each person that's another game, but I know that one too...

Was there a voice when you 'Fortified' a planet or something... I still go around saying in a high pitched voice 'Fortification' every year or so with the friend I played this with and he gets a kick out of it everytime... Actually thinking about it more, maybe there wasn't a voice at all, and I just remember saying it whenever the text said it...

Did the ships look kind of like Star Trek Ships... actually I'm just thinking of one in particular, a green half moon ship, kind of like a Klingon Battleship.

I couldn't find that "stars!" game, but it wasn't StarLord.

He said that the battles were in 2D, actually everything except the galaxy map was 2D he thinks. He seemed to think that the gravity bit was familier but he can't be sure.
Everything else is a dunno.

Hmmm... I guess I should have just said what I thought the game was when I first replied! =P Just wanted to make sure I didn't give you the wrong game. The game I played that was exactly like how you described was called Star Control. I know there were at least 3 of them. Hope that's the one that you are looking for!! Good luck finding it!

Ask him if there was one ship that would be reborn and you'd hear the choir sing "Hallelujah".

I used to play that game with my brother, and it kicked ass. Thanks for reminding me. Anyway, if that's the game, I'll give him a call to see what the name was.

finarfin: I concur with guruskrna. That sounds very much like Star Control 1 to me. Based on features like a rotatable galactic map with no background and non-simply-triangle ships, it's definitely not Stars!. I imagine you can get it somewhere; I know it was released for the Genesis, for example, and a friend of my still has a working cart for it.

Il Mago: There's only one game I know of with resurrecting ships that sing hallelujah when they come back. Those ships belonged to the Pkunk in Star Control II. The Pkunk were present in III, but I don't know if they behaved the same way.

If it was II, and you want to play it again, you're in luck. The developer, Toys for Bob, released the source under the GPL a few years back. It's now available under the name, "The Ur-Quan Masters" for free, and it's compatible with modern Windows systems. And Linux, for that matter.

You can also mix and match features from the PC and 3DO versions of the game, so you can have the nice PC style text menus and still have the full dialogue voiceovers from the 3DO.

From everything I understand, by the way, III was godawful.

Kukulza: I've never played Pax Imperia, I may look into that. I was initially going to say I didn't think that was the game, but it turns out I was thinking of Imperium Galactica 2.

Which, uh, for whatever it's worth, is not the game anyone in this thread is thinking of.

EDIT: I only looked at the date of the immediate previous poster; didn't realize this was a necrothread.

I know what game he was talking about, but I can't find it too...

It's FED.

A small galaxy where you start with one ship and have real time battles very very interactive;
it had top view with some pseudo 3d effects (dos remember?);
4 players at once (yellow, green, blue and red)
you could mine planets build more ships and give them orders (real time) and you can't lose your ship.
You could repair your ship on your planets. I think one of the ships you could build were called "Marauders".
After the game develops you use your ship only to travel between planets and give orders.
I used to play with one friend both on the same keyboard and I think he was using windows 95 (dos based).
I played it on 1994-95.

Found it!
