I think there's really no good answer for the single best first person shooter ever on PC. It really depends on what kind of gamer you are and what type of game you get into. If you like to be immersed in single player action, I think F.E.A.R. is the best game I've played so far, with HL and HL2 right behind. As far as multi-player it's hard to go wrong with Counterstrike, time has proven that this game is, in a word, good. People still play it and it's not the newest or best looking game. As far as old school games, Duke 3d was amazing for it's time.

Far and away the best 1st person shooter is currently F.E.A.R.

Older best 1st person shooter is Doom 3 (need high end PC to play it though).

BAH! And you DON'T need a high end PC to play F.E.A.R.??? PSH!!!!

I sure like COD 2, and Half-Life 2.

A loooooong time ago. Also Duke Nukem, Quake (all of 'em, but Expert CTF for Quake 1 was the best!) Now BF2/2142 consume too much of my free time.

And Counterstrike - although the 'community' is a bunch of rude people, to put it mildly.

Unreal Tournament is quite good - for multiplayer.

If you're into really fun games, Valve's Orange Box is for you.

Team Fortress 2, while lacking in competition, is the most fun class-based combat game I've ever played. There is a class for everyone and there appears to be no end to the ridiculous combat situations that you can get yourself into. The expressions on the characters faces and the words they yell while fighting keep the game lighthearted. There are multiple effective counters to everything, so one good player won't turn the whole game around (as long as their opponents keep thinking). Obviously, if you like to show off your 1337 skillz, this game is not for you. It's just plain fun.

If you're into single player, the Half-Life series is second to none. Half-Life and the extended storyline packs (which are free with a $20 purchase of the game), as well as Half-Life 2 and the Episodic expansions (which come with the game) are a fantastic blend of action, fear and puzzle solving (in Episode One, these three things seem to happen at the same time). The story leaves so much open and there are tons of hints as to what is really going on in the Half-Life universe. No spoilers, but the end of Episode 2 is incredibly intense but possibly the most fun I've ever had playing a computer game.

While we're on the Orange Box, Portal is incredibly brain-bending and unique gem that is sure to win a fair share of awards.

Team-based realistic small scale...Counterstrike is the best there is. There's not much to say about it - it's just balanced and good.

Back to class-based combat, if you're in to something a little more competitive, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is quite good. It is essentially Battlefield done right. There certainly isn't a shortage of explosives, but you die very quickly, because there are a lot of things that can kill you.

If you're into fast-paced twitch gaming, Quake 4 and the Unreal Tournament series are the competing religions. Quake 4 is a pick-up-and-play shoot-em-up game, although some (most) members of the community are a million times better than you. Unreal Tournament has some more depth, as it contains vehicles and quite a few more scenarios. However, UT3 is going to be coming out within the next few months, so I'd wait on the purchase (it will be good - Epic has yet to let me down).

Unless I'm missing some categories, that's pretty much the list of the best FPS games out there at the moment.

I'm gonna go with Counterstrike and the Half Lifes. But I agree the CS community is meh. Then again, the community almost everywhere is that way. I play a lot of WoW so I'm used to that kind of thing I guess. Hey, wait a second, I just realized ...I'm new here but this metacritic forum "community" is about the most positive one I've been around yet. It's just forums, but....cool. Hope that keeps up.
