And Counterstrike - although the 'community' is a bunch of rude people, to put it mildly.
Unreal Tournament is quite good - for multiplayer.
If you're into really fun games, Valve's Orange Box is for you.
Team Fortress 2, while lacking in competition, is the most fun class-based combat game I've ever played. There is a class for everyone and there appears to be no end to the ridiculous combat situations that you can get yourself into. The expressions on the characters faces and the words they yell while fighting keep the game lighthearted. There are multiple effective counters to everything, so one good player won't turn the whole game around (as long as their opponents keep thinking). Obviously, if you like to show off your 1337 skillz, this game is not for you. It's just plain fun.
If you're into single player, the Half-Life series is second to none. Half-Life and the extended storyline packs (which are free with a $20 purchase of the game), as well as Half-Life 2 and the Episodic expansions (which come with the game) are a fantastic blend of action, fear and puzzle solving (in Episode One, these three things seem to happen at the same time). The story leaves so much open and there are tons of hints as to what is really going on in the Half-Life universe. No spoilers, but the end of Episode 2 is incredibly intense but possibly the most fun I've ever had playing a computer game.
While we're on the Orange Box, Portal is incredibly brain-bending and unique gem that is sure to win a fair share of awards.
Team-based realistic small scale...Counterstrike is the best there is. There's not much to say about it - it's just balanced and good.
Back to class-based combat, if you're in to something a little more competitive, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is quite good. It is essentially Battlefield done right. There certainly isn't a shortage of explosives, but you die very quickly, because there are a lot of things that can kill you.
If you're into fast-paced twitch gaming, Quake 4 and the Unreal Tournament series are the competing religions. Quake 4 is a pick-up-and-play shoot-em-up game, although some (most) members of the community are a million times better than you. Unreal Tournament has some more depth, as it contains vehicles and quite a few more scenarios. However, UT3 is going to be coming out within the next few months, so I'd wait on the purchase (it will be good - Epic has yet to let me down).
Unless I'm missing some categories, that's pretty much the list of the best FPS games out there at the moment.
