Hi everyone! Going back to the topic, the best way I can describe GW is a combo of Diablo 2 PvP and Counter-Strike. You make teams, clans then you fight CS style. Each player has their own role and you have to play well to win.

For me, I like WoW better (but I didn't say that it is the best game that I ever played). But GW is awesome if you just want to play a few rounds.

All I can say, that death frum^, has no idea of what is he talking about since he obviously hasnt played GW, and Caye unfortunately played only PvP...leaving ~120 hours of pure PvE RpG to others.

Guild Wars is a fantastic game, that breaks almost all clichees found in every other MMORPG on market: traveling, items, armors, storyline(this is compared to WoW a literature, which will get you involved). Game is designed to lead You through main story through Missions which are not quests, quests are separate entities inside the game.

PvP is best to none, fast paced, arena like, which means you can fight more than 1 team at the same time.

I personally like WOW because of its gameplay and the kind of it doesn't make you bore. Guild Wars.. I saw their ad on TV yesterday.. I was amaze by it. I still haven't played it yet but it seems cool to play too.. Maybe i'll check it out sometime. Smiler

If you're just a PvE player, once you've done the story with GW, there's nothing else for you to do. If you like PvP, then that's the game for you.

easy way to think of it is this...

both games suck, for different reasons.

WoW is a high priced MMO that has immense popularity and a good balance of fun and playability. you won't get too bored if you spend a fair amount of time learning to grind and explore, teams/guilds make the grind more enjoyable. besides, the grind is there to make the WoW economy work, or to help the chinese economy, i dont quite know which. bliz made a fun MMO that deserves the hype and the shame, because it emphasises team play but you can do it all solo as well.

GW is an easier MMO that takes PvP elements, and reduces it to the more fun aspects. it's not a RPG in the traditional sense, since you dont have to save the princess, courier rabbits feet from one side of the land to the other, kill 5,000 rats etc. the quest/grind is still there, but not as bad as it is in other MMO's once you get into the game proper. in some ways the instanced dungeons and lands make it feel like a 3D Diablo2 where you just mindlessly hacknslash through the countryside, but theres more fun later on.

I've never played WoW (because I AM a cheap bastard), but I loved guild wars. I stopped playing video games lately (music and reading and school and gf pwn games) so it's been a while, but I enjoyed playing it for HOURS.

I enjoy both and they are very different.

If you like playing online with a variety of people and/or have A LOT of free time, you might prefer WOW. WOW has SO MUCH variety in things to do (crafting, PVP, grinding, instances, etc), characters to play, people online, etc. The WOW universe is cartoony and fun. The WOW story, in my opinion, is second rate, but WOW content contains more humor than GW.

If you like questing/PVP and/or beauty is important to you, play Guild Wars. The Guild Wars universe is the most beautiful I've ever seen, its quests are more interesting, and PVP is more of a sport than WOW.

Guild Wars caters to casual players. With changes in the expansion I think WOW is more of a casual game (it used to have 8 - 12 hour end game instances, but these are gone).

If starting are playing WOW or Guild Wars to meet people online, I can give you an idea of who you'd come across. In Guild Wars, although most the characters are female, few players are. Female Guild Wars characters tend to be old women (40 year old plus). Most GW characters are guys aged 10-30ish, including many metrosexual or gay dudes. In WOW, I think a higher percentage of players are actually girls, some of which are younger (20-35+) and few of which are single. WOW has fewer children, probably because of the monthly fee. WOW has a lot of older people, too.

WoW has indeed got an incredible amount of stuff to do.... especially with the recently released expansion. There's a review of "The Burning Crusade" expansion here:

First, this is not meant as a slander-fest of Guild Wars, because I have not played it (yet). This is just a list of a few great things about WoW and of a few false myths about the game.

Pros:
*Graphics (can also be a con) are artistic and varied, even though they may not be overly advanced.
*The world is split these areas are instanced (as they are in Guild Wars, I've been told), therefore you can interact with virtually anyone on your server as long as they're in the right zone (this doesn't mean you can't talk and invite people from all over the game world).
*The music is orchestrated and fantastic, as are the limited voice overs presented in the game.
*It's extremely easy to get into, but not so much to master.
*It offers two completely different and open modes of play: PVP or PVE.
*It's endgame content is fantastic in quality.

Cons:
*The graphics can be argued as being simple and not "LOOK AT ME I'M HIGH POLY WITH FANTASTIC BUMP-MAPPING!"
*It can be life-consuming.

Myths:
*Leveling is not tedious if you're not a total retard. You do NOT grind to level, unless you want to (which I don't recommend, because it IS boring). There are thousands of quests (THOU-SANDS) that you can undertake to level up.

*this is a work in progress, life had me taken away while writing it*

Morals are relative.

Well I finally tried WoW coz I got a 14 day free trial DVD-ROM that came with my Starcraft BattleChest purchase the other day.

The graphics could be better. Like I was impressed by the intro cinematic cut scene, but the picture in the actual game was kinda sub par. I only played it for like an hour last nite so I can't really give much praise/criticism with any justification, but so far, it's an okay game. I can see how anyone can get hooked on it. One thing I'm debating about is whether it's worth paying $15 a month...I don't really see myself playing it everyday, so I dunno if it's worth the monthly subscription.

The game interface also has a lot of stuff on it (things you click on). And I mean a LOT. It's not a game you can completely master in a week, maybe not even in a month.

I agree. I'm not sure how people have come to the conclusion that WoW is a game of pure grinding. I guess some people haven't realized yet they don't have to grind because, like Synod said, there are countless quests to do which will help you level and meet cool people to adventure with.

The downside to this game, is that indeed, it can take up a lot of time in one day.

Regarding the post made by Monuia about WoW's gender demographics, I noticed as well that with the not-too-many female characters playing a lot of them are married. There was actually a couple who asked me to help them in one quest (being that I was several levels above them and they needed a stronger character to complete the quest).

This is my story, I started out playing WoW for about a year...Totally consumed my life, now being level 70 its a rarity to play...so I went to GW where I DID NOT LIKE AT ALL. If you are going to play GW, do not play WoW first...You will learn that WoW is almost like an upgrade to GW and a cost...I am broke as hell, but I still play WoW(Its like crack, not that I have ever tried it).

$15 a month isn't that bad if you think about it. The Original GW and its expansions cost about 50 dollars each which comes every six months. So it all works out to the same costs (WoW may charge a monthly $15 but only costs 20 bux to start out, and so far has only released only one expansion in 2 years).

Guild Wars by far!!! World of Warcraft has shitty graphics and i got bored almost instantly! Also paying £8 a month is ridiculous! Guild Wars has no online subscription fee and is generally a better game, espescially for PVP - with Guild matches, Hall of Heroes and the Various PVP Arenas to battle other players in. Also the visuals are SOOOO much better
