Wow, readinng this thread takes me back to yesteryear, where the sun was brighter, the day was longer, and everyone was friends.
Really, Return to Zork, Commander Keen, The 7th Level, haven't thought of those games in years.
Still only one single mention for Sim City. I loved all the versions and SC4 is my favorite game of all time. Plus the others, the orginal Rollercoaster Tycoon, where you could kill the peeps, and Morrowind, where I have 4.4 gigs of plugins. and of course all of the Civ games.
It could be that 1701AD might make the list. No shooters in my list, but I did enjoy Bioshock. Great thread, made me register.
1) XCom, the Original 2) Civilization II 3) Warlords II 4) Master of Orion II 5) Master of Magic 6) EverQuest I 7) Diablo I 8) Portal 9) Ultima Online 10) Dominions (I, II, or III)
Baldur's Gate 2. Planescape: Torment. Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. (NOT Oblivion, a.k.a the biggest piece of overhyped crap ever). Knights of the Old Republic 2. Fallout 2. Caesar III. Psychonauts. Starcraft. C&C Red Alert. The Sims 2.

In my experience, Grand Auto Theft 4 is the best game I have played. You can enjoy any kind of stuff in a single game, such as driving, fighting, mission, etc. Game graphics are also near to reality.
Oblivion - Amazingly large and fun to a degree, although the itemization was fairly lacking.
Final Fantasy XI - Fantastic game, takes a hardcore player to make it in this game and it was very fun when you had a good group of players, i will admit though some of the amount of work put into it was for very bad rewards. But to date it's a unique game which can't be said for many others
World of Warcraft- Well this one shouldn't really be on this list but i feel it does deserve some recognition, pre ex-pac it was pretty fun until you capped out, then it was just... lame. Once people began to worship this game as god i backed off from it and never looked back.
Dead Space- 'Nuff said.. ok in depth, one of the best survival horror games EVER, well honestly it is the best, i would say RE1 was the best but that'd be nostalgia speaking, this game is simply amazing! I'm even replaying it, which i never do in an FPS, and although i've already beaten it i still jump sometimes when enemies come out of no where, it's just all timed beautifully, also the atmosphere is so amazing, if you haven't played this yet, BUY IT!
Counter Strike - Before source this was the best FPS i've ever played, it's all gone down hill though sadly, rarely play it anymore, 1.6 is still pretty good but it'll never be the same.
Day of Defeat- Same as above, was great, now a shell of it's former self.
Fallout 1 and 2- Need i say more? If you've never played either of these, go to amazon and buy them, cheap games now and amazing for your money, i mean seriously there are hardly any games like these anymore, amazing atmosphere, fantastic play style, everything about these games makes them amazing.
Warhammer Online- Amazing game, one of the best MMO's out there, a lot of people say it's WoW 2.0... you couldn't be anymore wrong... try it and see, play it past lvl 10 though before you think you've experienced it.. great pvp, all of the classes bring something to the table, there are some minor issues with class imbalance, but they are all being worked on, also the updates for the game are coming pretty fast and are very nice hotfixes and content updates, with minimal bugs, and just general improvement across the board, this will be the #1 MMO out there in a year or so, once WoW addicts figure Wotlk is the same crap recycled again for them...
Anyways there are many more, there's a whole ton of amazing games out there, go to your local game stop and check out the "reduced" bins and you'll find some gems no doubt!
1. XCOM. I cannot stress this one enough. I played it when it was released and I continue to come back to it time and time again and it is still fun. Its almost 20 years old and it is the only game that I can look past the dated graphics and still get a compelling game out of. 2. Fallout 1&2 <--you tell me another game where you can be a child killer, porn star, and boxer at the same time of surviving a land of giant scorpions, deathclaws and supermutants. Fallout 3 would have been in there if it allowed as much freedom as its predecessors. And as for the rest of them, I really can't place what is better than the other but I loved them all. Half-life 1&2 Baldurs Gate 1&2 Oblivion, only because of the sheer amount of modded material that can be added to it. Duke Nukem 3D Doom 1 and 2 Team fortress 1 and 2 Rainbow Six, Back when you had to "think" Jedi Knight, Dark forces 2 Worms-all of em Company of Heroes Homeworld Dawn of War Max Payne (Kung fu mod! never gets old!) deus ex 1, 2 sucked imo only because it got consolised with loading times and smaaaall maps. Thief 1 and 2 (See above for why thief 3 sucked) Battlefield 1942, 2 All the total war games Crusader: No Remorse, No Regret, I almost flunked outta school because of the first damn one. FEAR System Shock 2 Oh yeah and so far Left 4 Dead is skyrocketing on this list.

Oblivion, but not it's far superior predecessor Morrowind?
Thief 1 and 2, but not Thief 3, thief 3 which contains the seminal horror level Journey into the Cradle?
Deux Ex 2 sucked not because of loading times and small maps, it sucked because the inventory system was ridiculous the plot wasn't immersive at all, really it was just a poor game especially in comparison to the masterpiece that is Deus Ex.
I'd also have to say the Total war games fail at some point in which they forget what makes their game fun. In Rome Total war it was the point at which you have around 60 territories and the micromanagement simply becomes to much to actually be fun and it begins to feel like work, as if you actually had to manage an empire.
farcry. way superior to the second one. you had a good combination of multiple paths to reach a single objective, so in a way it was linear but good at disguising it. one pc game that is very underrated IMO
