No replies in a week and a half, so I'll profer my opinions on each of these Massively Multiplayer Online (MMO) games.
First, these are 2 entirely different games, although couched in the same "world" with a distance of some 500 years. That is, EverQuest 2 takes place 500 years after EverQuest.
The play style needed for these games are also quite different. Quest process is different, fight process is different, tradeskills are different, ad nauseum.
EverQuest 2 is quite a bit more "lead you around" and explain every detail of every single thing in the game, from fighting that wolf over there (clicking it to select it tells you if you can solo it or if it requires a group to defeat) and quests (details on who to see, what to take, how long you have, etc are in the quest log) and the tradeskills are like their own mini game.
EverQuest, being one of the early MMOs, is more hands off, although the new tutorial zone is fantastic (!!!). Quests are given and you need to remember what is needed to complete it. Encounters with creatures only have a general level indicator, and nothing about what is required to defeat said encounter, requiring some trial and error or good planning to defeat difficult creatures. Tradeskills have improved quite a bit since day 1, and the new UI for them goes a long way in helping.
Both are good, in their own way, but are for different audiences.
