Insightful conversation guys, if you guys take it over to the politics thread, I may join in.

Something like: "If you post it, they will come."

Hi, I am Ironic Knave as you can see. Now how did I come by this name? Well, it's actually an anagram of my full name, with the addition of the K. While I won't say what my full name is- I'm a paranoid android, ok sorry for the bad pun Wink- but I don't mind telling you guys my first nickname, which is Rico.

I am a sixteen year old dude who lives in the Philippines. I used to live in Washington DC but I migrated to this country last year. I generally love it here, though I have a difficult time connecting with some musically. And that is precisely the reason why I'm here.

Most of my classmates aren't really into the same music as me, they're more into Soulja Boy, Fall-Out Boy, Avril Lavigne, and while I can like some of the music that they like, I feel a bit frustrated that nobody I know in real life has the same taste and fervent love for music as I do.

So here's my history in music: I admit that when I started out I wasn't a fan of ANY kind of music. I was too impatient to sit down and listen to any kind of music because it would deter me from my main hobbies: videogames and reading. After a few years of that, at the age of 14, I started listening to music. I admit to only liking ONE genre, which was rap, and not only that but I only liked one rap band- Bone Thugs n Harmony, which is still one of my favorite rap groups.

After a few months of this, at the age of 15, I tentatively started going into rock. I started out with the standard stuff- Red Hot Chili Peppers, Linkin Park, Papa Roach, some Metallica as well as a slew of other stuff. I listened to all their albums and songs so many times before I finally asked myself the oh-so important question:

What else is out there? Answer: so much, much more.

So I begun searching for music. Soon, I've begun spending ALL of my free time downloading and listening to music. After a year, at the age of sixteen almost seventeen, I have a collection of about 3,000 songs most of them from varying genres.

My favorites are still mostly rock and a bit of rap, but nowadays, I have a bit of everything. I've recently started getting into electronic music, especially trance.

So here's my preferences in music. I'm a very picky guy when it comes to listening to music, and I have what I call the 'crap filter' which I apply when listening. This pretty much means that if I don't get hooked right away then I probably won't like it, and it's because of this attitude which has led me to dislike a lot of bands that have been otherwise loved and praised. I admit that I occasionally go back and give some albums a chance, and a lot of times, I end up loving them.

So here are my favorite bands, though it's difficult choosing from my favorites, and it's not in any particular order: PJ Harvey (my personal favorite female artist), Red Hot Chili Peppers (wow, Blood Sugar Sex Magick still remains one of my favorite albums, though their early ones were also great), [Alice in Chains (Layne Stanley is my favorite vocalist), Pavement(Slanted and Enchanted is the 'first' indy album which I listened to and it helped get me into the genre), The White Stripes(they're just great to listen and jam too), Kimya Dawson(I've been a fan for about a year, but seeing their songs on the Juno just made me love them more, A Perfect Circle(One of my favorite Alternative Metal bands, De La Soul (my favorite rap group, followed closely by Bone Thugs), and lastly, Sonic Youth(Thurston's and Lee's guitar style has greatly influenced mine.) I have WAY more favorites, but these are the ones that I can name at the top of my head.

Aside from music, my biggest hobby is reading and writing. I plan on becoming a journalist someday, and at the moment I'm an intern for a Filipino newspaper. My favorite books are: any by Dostoevsky's, Dune Series, Ender's Game, The Catcher in the Rye, and the Stranger. I am also very interested in philosophy and politics, so part of my daily ritual is arguing about both to anyone that'll listen.

So here's my intro, I look forward to posting here. Smiler

Heh, well no wonder my life is so pleasurable...

Well, I'm an absolute idiot! I looked at the "stickies" up above and totally missed this one, down here. I promise not to be so dense in future.

I live in So. Calif, and work in a large zoo. I love international travel, classical music, movies and good tv. I look forward to reading your thoughts.

OH..and I'm addicted to "LOST."

Wink Because Lost is a huge puzzle, and I like puzzles.

And because it's among the most creative writing I've ever seen on a television series. (Right up there with DEXTER.)

Jackson, why do you hate everything good?

Next you'll be telling us that you don't understand how people can enjoy those boring chocolate chip cookies!

Dude, my cousin raves about Lost, so I gave it a shot... and it just did nothing for me. But, most TV shows do absolutely nothing for me.

I think I just have horrible taste. Although I do like chocolate chip cookies, I will only eat fresh ones if they're still hot, fresh baked... otherwise they have to be store bought.

Someone in my apartment is bumpin rap music, all I can hear is the bass... it sounds like a heartbeat. Kinda creepy.

He's supposedly Mark's evil twin. I've heard he's stalking the poor old man just waiting til the time is right to torture and kill him.

Oh well. C'est la guerre.

Dude, if you're going to use a photograph of Christopher "Bloodsucking Badass" Lee, use the right person.

Hi all. I've lurked here for a couple of months, and I've definitely gotten some great recs from reading through the "Best of . . ." posts in the Music forum. Even though I'm probably an old man by message board standards, I'm still a relative nub when it comes to music.

Until I received an iPod as a Christmas present just over two years ago, I mainly just listened to the radio. About a week after that Christmas, I was listening to music at work and Pearl Jam's "Evenflow" shuffled up for the third time that day. That is when I realized that I needed to seek out something new and different.

I don't download illegally because I'm paranoid like that, but I am cheap and seek out as many free and legal downloads as possible. CNET's download.com has provided me with several hundred tracks, and I suppose that is one reason why; unlike most avid music fanatics; I listen to large playlists more often than I listen to complete albums (blasphemy . . . I know).

My tastes currently run right along the edge of mainstream alternative pop and rock. I find myself listening to a lot of Modest Mouse, Pavement, Beck, The White Stripes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Weezer, and The Presidents of the United States of America. I don't think that my taste in music is particularly good, but I really don't care. It's a cop out, but I listen to what I like.

As long as you like it, it's good. Unless it's Kenny G, then you'd be wrong. Welcome to the site!

No need to make any excuses for what you like. I like quite a bit of more "authentic", "arty" or avant-garde music, but I make no excuses for being a big Green Day fan despite anyway. Everyone likes what they like, and actually it looks like you have good taste Big Grin

Welcome to the forums, BtS. Glad to hear you've gotten some good recommendations from us so far.

I had a stick of CareFree gum, but it didn't work. I felt pretty good while I was blowing that bubble, but as soon as the gum lost its flavor I was back to pondering my mortality.

Thanks for the welcome. If you got ahold of my iPod, I think you might change your statement above. It might not be Kenny G or Michael Bolton bad, but I have a strange affinity for mid 90's pop and 00's pop punk.
