Hello. My name is Felix, I'm 18 years old, and I'm from Las Vegas but am currently living abroad in Helsinki. This fall I will be attending Film School at Tisch School of the Arts in NYU. I love watching and critiquing movies almost as much as making them, and have seen more films than almost everyone I know. My favorite filmmakers are: Kubrick Tarantino Alfonso Cuaron P.T. Anderson Michel Gondry David Lynch Tim Burton Wes Anderson Jim Jarmusch Jean-Pierre Jeunet Richard Linklater and many more that I cant think of right now. I also love good music, especially indie rock, underground rap, and electronica. My favorite artists include: Aesop Rock MF Doom TV on the Radio Ratatat Justice Death From Above 1979 Deerhoof Animal Collective Of Montreal Flaming Lips Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Arcade Fire The Strokes Yeah Yeah Yeahs ...and the like TV is cool, although I mostly hit up HBO and IFC. Some shows I watch: 24 Weeds The Wire The Sopranos Extras Curb Your Enthusiasm Entourage Da Ali G Show The Office Arrested Development Seinfeld Daily Show/Colbert Report I try to read when I can. Authors I like: Nietzche Kierkegaard Nabokov Faulkner Poetry: Ginsberg, Snyder, Brautigan, and other beats of similar distinction. And I'll conclude with some random facts about me: I am a Democratic Socialist I drink coffee ALL the time I am a Jewish Atheist I like good food and I like you too

Hello all, you can call me Mark. I discovered Metacritic whilst looking for best of lists about a month ago. This, I said to myself is exactly what I have been searching for. I have reached the age of 40, and I am interested in anything and everything. Gaming, reading, films, music, art, philosophy, zoology, politics, writing; popular culture and high intellectual pursuit all. I'll talk about anything to learn more. I teach Film and Media studies. I currently find myself living in China, just outside Shanghai. Normally, you would find me living in Brisbane, Australia. I look forward to interesting discussions. You're an intriguing bunch.

Hello there. I've been coming to this site just over a month & didn't realize there was a spot to tell the good folks in here about yourself. I've left little bits & pieces of my story all over these forums but, here it is all at once for anyone who wants to know: My name is Michael & I'm a mixed (Half Black, Half White) 28 year old male. I've been married going on 4 years & I have a son & a daughter. I'm a Christian man but, not one of those Christians. I believe everyone is entitled to believe what they choose to. That is what "Free Will" is all about. I've spent the majority of my life in a hospital bed because of an "accident" with a drunk driver when I was 10 months old. I'm not paralyzed but, I'm in need of many surgeries to keep me "normal". These frequent hospital trips usually last 3-6 months & there wasn't much else to do but, watch movies. They helped me escape the boredom & pain of my life. (In fact, I'm scheduled to go in, again, in a week. So you probably won't be hearing from me in a while.) So, this is why I love movies alot more than most. I own over 700 movies, which means I've bought over 100 DVD's a year since I bought a DVD player in November 2000. My favorite movies are Action/Adventure & Sci-Fi. I do love a good Horror/Thriller & will always enjoy a great Comedy. In Comedies I love the satiracal movies such as "Hot Shots", "The Naked Gun", "Airplane", & "Scary Movie". I like these the best, the characters can wink at the camera because they know it's ridiculous. It does take some talent to make a good spoof movie & not everyone is funny. I mean, just look at "Date Movie". Wait, don't look at it. It'd just be waste of your life, just take my word for it, IT STINKS. I'm really big on picture & sound when it comes to movies, so I travel to the next state to a much better theater than what is available in my area. I have a room dedicated to movie watching with a 52" widescreen television, 5.4 surround sound, & no windows. I call it "The Den" mostly because that's what sitcom families call the dad's special place. It's decorated with movie posters that I got from a theater I used to work next to. I stopped the employees when they were about to throw them all away. I can't believe they just throw these things away! It was ALL of their posters from the past year. I was just lucky enough to be working the day they came dragging that stuff by my store window!!! I also collected comics up until about the year 2000, after that, the comics I enjoyed changed to match the movies that were coming out based on them. I really hated that they did that. But, don't get me wrong, I still want them to keep makin' the movies! I don't have a whole lot, maybe about 900-something comics which pales in comparison to some other collections. I also collect comic-related toys but, only the ones that are filled with detail & look really good. Same goes for movie-related toys. I have an Alien Queen diorama that's just killin' 'em! I am a GIGANTIC fan of 'The Simpsons'! I have every episode on tape. I personally recorded each episode & then went back & took out the commercials so I could have uninterupted laughs. I own every toy & obscure merchandise they've released, from Pez dispensers to dog frisbees with the chacters on them. My pride & joy is a picture of the Simpsons & the autograghs of the voice cast over each character they play, including Matt's signature at the bottom! As far as other shows I enjoy: 'Scrubs', 'Reno:911', 'Robot Chicken', 'CSI: Las Vegas & New York', 'Criminal Minds', 'Without a Trace', 'Cold Case', & 'Law & Order' including its spin-offs, . Yes, I like the criminal shows. The Comedies I enjoyed the most were cancelled: 'Futurama' & 'Arrested Development'. Stupid networks. I go by Monkey_Boy because I used to own a small asian monkey named KinKaid & I loved him very much. Everyone called me Monkey Boy when they saw us together. And that was all the time. We watched movies together & he loved horses. Strangely enough, he was afraid of them up close. His all time favorite movies were ones with animals in them & he was quiet & still when I showed him Tim Burton's "Planet of the Apes". Not only did it have talking primates but, they rode on horses. I had him since he was 3 days old up until he was 6 years old. He was the best pet I had ever owned & I miss him everyday. He was killed by Animal Control while I was at work. I didn't know it was illegal to own a monkey in Independence, Mo. & I had just moved there to live with a buddy of mine to save money on rent. They knocked on the door & confiscated him when my roommate let them in, he didn't know what they had wanted until it was too late. They killed him to check for disease which made no sense since he was born here in Missouri. I was devastated & later learned that it was my roommates ex-girlfriend who called them because, they broke up. I still don't know why she did this to me, I had nothing to do with their relationship. I love R&B & I do listen to rap. My favorite artists are Scarface, Brotha Lynch Hung, Celly Cel, C-Bo, UGK, E-40, B-Legit, Gerald Levert, Barry White, Silk, Jaheim, Tank, & Ginuwine.Well, that's a look at me. I don't know what else to say but, see ya around the rest of the Forums on this site!

You can read more of my life experiences on page 3 of 'Your Movie Ideas' & in several pages of 'Friendly Talk on Religion'. You're not the first to tell me that I should write a book. EVERYONE I tell my story to, including the students of S.A.D.D. meetings I talk to about drinking & driving, always tell me the same thing. Maybe I should get started on it.

For Monkey_Boy: I just read your introduction and I was strikingly saddened by what happened to your monkey. I have a strong, deep, emotional affection for animals and your story almost brought a tear to my eye. It takes a lot for me to cry. Not only is it so sad that you lost a close companion, one that you dearly loved, but in the manner that it was taken from you. And like you said, for no intended reason. I am very sorry for your loss and I feel very sad writing this. I don't know what I would do if I lost my little dog or any of the four that live at my girlfriend's house. I was also devestated when Barbaro eventually lost his battle over his shattered leg. Anyways, I love animals, hey maybe that is why I love Finding Nemo so much! Anyways, I am so sorry for you.

Whoa!! You know, this whole time I was wondering if there was a place on these boards where people can introduce themselves..... Oh well, better late than never, I suppose. Well, my name is John, I'll be 24 in a few weeks, and I was born and raised in a small town of about 2,000 in northern Michigan. For the past two years, I have been living in the L.A. area attending graduate school, working on a master's in biotechnology, more or less... After school, I will be relocating to Boston for work. And I guess... that's that about that. My name on these boards is from a kid's poem I read somewhere a few years ago... I think it went something like this: Platypus, Platypus, you are the best Platypus, Platypus, your baby name is Quest.Yeah... I think that's right... Such a nifty little poem. I really dig a lot of musical genres, but I'd have to say IDM is closest to my heart. That being said, I still really like indie rock, undie hip-hop, electro, trip-hop, etc. etc. I think my favorite song ever is "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits and my favorite album of all time might be Rubber Soul... at least for now. I'm also really into movies and studied some film in college. I'd have to say The Decalogue is my favorite movie ever, though The Passion of Joan of Arc, Persona, Mulholland Drive, and Nashville are certainly way up there. I also get a huge kick out of watching Freddy Got Fingered and once watched it three times in a row back-to-back. I think I've done that with Wet Hot American Summer too. What can I say, they're fun to watch!! In addition to these things, I like Metacritic , beer, running, hiking, camping, reading, talking about my dogs, browsing Wikipedia, and gin & tonics. Oh, and I'm obsessed with The X-Files. And... I guess that's all! Good night!

WHOA. I thought I was posting here a little late when I posted here a month & a half after I joined. Oh, well. Nice to know a little about ya, Platypus Quest. Especially the origin of your name. I must admit, it is a strange one & I was curious as to how you came up with it. And thank you, FragileKidA. It's nice to know I'm not the only man who has had strong feelings for his pets.

Being that I have been here for a little over a year, I figured that it was time for me to finally, formally familiarize myself. I am 22 years old and live in El Paso, Texas (also known as the Sun City,) summers here are torrid. I am a middle child but I live by myself in a little studio apartment with my dog, Molly. She is only two years old and will be three this coming May. She is a small Chihuahua mix but she is about one quarter Dachshund so she has a small weenie body, it really is cute. I recently moved in a little less than a month ago and was forced out of my house by my entire family. Enough of that, I am sure you all don’t want to hear about my dysfunctional family. I have a girlfriend whom I have been with about four and a half years now (wow, surprised she hasn’t tired of me.) She is truly loving, caring and nourishing—everything a good woman is—and is ultimately my better half. I was going to school at the University of Texas at El Paso but I had to get a full-time job and had no choice but to drop all of my classes. Ever since I was a little kid I wanted to be a veterinarian, I love animals with a passion so I started off as a science major, that didn’t work out because the science department was schedule-demanding and all of my classes were chosen for me. A small part of me still wishes I was studying to be a vet, but you make decisions and move on. I always had a deep passion for music, I know how to play the saxophone, piano and drums. When I graduated high school everyone just automatically assumed that I would be a music major, I made All-State, All-State Jazz, always a drill instructor, drum major for a year so I became a music major. I never really fit in there though, all of the music majors are a bit too fanatical for me and that department seems to think that everyone should devote 150% of their time and energy towards being a music major. That sounds fine and dandy from their standpoint but for many us it isn’t that easy. See, UTEP is a commuter school, meaning that most of the students that go to school there live in the El Paso area; most of them still live with their parents. On top of that, El Paso is a town filled with a lot of money-stricken families. Some of us, including myself, have to pay for their own transportation, insurance, cell phones; so in turn we must get jobs. Some of the classes in the music department are only offered at specific times and so you have to leave your schedule open from 8AM-6PM, not many places let you work full time after that. I loved being a music major in that I learned so much, intricate music theory where you can part-write, figure out what a German Augmented 6th chord looks like and sounds like, the universal power of the ii-V-I progression—the fifth sometimes with the seventh, borrowed chords, secondary dominants, song forms and progressions, blah, blah, blah. I got really good at my sax, being able to play Bozza’s Aria and Mule’s Tableaux, mastering the Larry Teal Handbook, reading out of Major/Minor books, learning Charlie Parker’s Omnibook, being able to play John Coltrane’s Giant Steps, etc. It was truly great, but with this whole thing happened at my house, I changed majors—maybe too abruptly—and became an English Literature major. Do you have any idea how embarrassing that sounds? Pathetic. So now I am taking a semester off in an effort to get my feet under me in am attempt to start off anew, let’s see how it goes. I love a lot of different styles, genres and eras of music. My forte would have to be classical and jazz by far, I have a ton of that stuff entrenched in my head. For contemporaries there is the beloved Radiohead, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Talking Heads, Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Steely Dan and many more. I collect records, although I don’t have too many, my prized record has to be Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, simply perfection. I also have a lot of books, Spanish and English. Some of my favorite authors are Lorca, Borjes, Márquez and de Unamuno for Spanish, as for English there is Vonnegut, Hardy, Orwell, Achebe, Dickens and Camus. I like a lot of movies, but I don’t know that much—or at least close to what some other people on here know—but I love Finding Nemo, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, As Good As It Gets, Reservoir Dogs, Do the Right Thing, Sideways, Mean Streets, and Sin City just to name a few. Finally, I am really into sports. I watch “Sportscenter” every night and I love football, baseball, soccer and basketball. I have loved the Yankees and Cowboys since I was about five years old. I really like the Spurs and I follow the U.S. national soccer team very closely. I have liked them ever since they were thumped, embarrassed and ridiculed at the 1998 World Cup. Living on the border of the U.S. and Mexico there are plenty of people that root and cheer for the Mexican team, but ours is much, much better. Heck, we always beat them, including an impressive 2-0 victory a few months ago. We won 3-1 against Ecuador with Donovan’s superb hat-trick. The future looks bright. Well, that is enough about me, sorry there is so much junk, I just felt like venting out a bit and letting you know who I was.

Aw, man, FKA. You were totally my friend until you got to the Yankees and the Cowboys! I love Unamuno, and think San Miguel, Bueno, Martir is the most moving book I've ever read. I also saw, in another thread, that you love Arturo Perez-Reverte, one of my favorite contemporary authors. But the Cowboys!

You guys are the first people I have ever "met" who have read Unamuno! Our Lord Don Quixote is one of my fave books. I didn't think anybody outside an English Lit dept even knew he existed....but then there aren't too many Hispanics in Oz!...cool..

Well kendo, you can be my friend even though you don't like the Cowboys and Yankees, I don't mind. De Unamuno is a great author but I think I still prefer Lorca. Yes I am Hispanic but I have read a lot of Spanish stuff anyways. At least 75% of the people that live here speak only Spanish so you have to know how to speak it well. Great to see other Spanish readers though.
