I know it's not whatsoever a general music discussion, but the same general people seem to post in the music bit so an introductions bit might be useful to help start some sort of community!

Anyway i'll start seen as i suggested it!

I'm 20 years old, student of international business and spanish in the UK. I like all types of music but mainly guitar music (apart from heavier stuff). Some of my favourite all time acts are beatles, beach boys, ryan adams, michael jackson, prince and marvin gaye! My fav films are pulp fiction and amelie! That's about it that i'd want to say!

I'm Bags, a 30-something woman in DC who sees a lot of bands play and buys way too many CDs. I listen primarily to alternative/indie -- love guitar power pop (Bigger Lovers, Sloan) and some of the new post punk that's coming out (The National, Snow Patrol). I'd love to see some vibrant forums where I can find out about new music and get some feedback on what's out there. I love metacritic and have been using it since its inception.

Good idea, Boris.

I'm 36 and living in Bloomington, Indiana. I've worked in non-commercial radio for nearly twenty years and worked for an independently owned midwestern record chain in St. Louis for about six years.

As I mentioned elsewhere, jazz is my first love and classical has always been an occupational hazzard, so it casts a long shadow on my listening as well.

With the exception of a precious few avant-garde artists, I have grown jaded about the state of jazz, so I tend to listen to a lot popular music in all its myriad genres and sub-genres. Like most people who will wander through here, I expect, I fancy myself a musical omnivore.

My all-time favorites are hardly original; The Beatles, John Coltrane, Ludwig van Beethoven, it would be hard to name any of the pantheon of great artists I haven't obsessed on at one time or another. What I like mostthese days, though, is the next great artist, the next great album, the next great song. The classics are great in any genre, but nothing beats discovering something for the first time.

Hi, everyone!

I am 28-years-old, and as you can tell from my username, male. I have a college degree (BA) in economics, but I'm looking for a career in web design or programming. I have many interests besides computers, but music is by far my biggest. A big part of my life is music. Buying that new CD I've been wanting feels like it used to feel when I'd find that new and cool action figure. I have a very diverse taste, and like quite a bit in the mainstream. Please be easy on me for that - talent can be debated, but how enjoyable music is is subjective. My favorite artist is The Beatles. I could have a huge list of faves, so I'll just list a few in each genre I like. Others include much more classic rock (Simon and Garfunkel, Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell,) big band (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bobby Darin, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney,) folk (Peter, Paul & Mary, Pete Seeger, Linda Thompson,) rock (The Bangles, Blondie, Go Gos, Bruce Springsteen, The Cars, power pop like Cheap Trick and Badfinger, Tom Petty,) pop/rock (The Corrs, Michelle Branch, Madonna, Avril Lavigne, Elton John, Evan And Jaron,) modern rock (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Nirvana (especially on Nevermind,) Kay Hanley, PJ Harvey, Alanis Morissette, Hole, Garbage,) modern singer(s)/songwriter(s) (Abra Moore, Sarah McLachlan, Aimee Mann, Jayhawks, Cindy Alexander, Wilco, New Pornographers, Neil Finn,) Motown and older R&B (Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross, The Supremes, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson,) modern R&B (late Aaliyah, former TLC, Usher, Alicia Keys,) country (Dixie Chicks, Alan Jackson, Patty Loveless, George Strait, Alison Krauss) alt-country (Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Kasey Chambers,) traditional country (Dolly Parton, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline,) classical (Beetoven, Mozart, Wagner, Vivaldi), new age (Loreena McKennitt.)

I'm not crazy about bubblegum pop (a couple exceptions,) rap, nu-metal, death metal (I enjoy some metal like Ozzy and early Metallica,) industrial, reggae, much in pure punk, "patriotic" country, and opera.

I won't be on the boards here a lot, but I'll stop by from time to time.

Hey y'all! I'm 23, in Arizona, definite "musical omnivore" type. Love expanding my tastes, love going back and reminding myself what I really like, etc, etc.

Right now I'm listening to some Mr. Lif, Perspects, Led Zeppelin, Flaming Lips, Modest Mouse, Propagandhi, Latyrx, Bootsy Collins, Tool, Wire, The Clash, Opeth, Gordian Knot, Bob Marley, Haloblack, Laibach, Belle & Sebastian, The Stills, Charles Mingus, Duke Ellington, Broken Social Scene.

A few more artists that come to mind (that I really like): Air, David Bowie, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Telefon Tel Aviv, Einsturzende Neubauten, Miles Davis, Robert Johnson, Pink Floyd, Buena Vista Social Club (and related), Depeche Mode, Pig, The Beatles, Johnny Watson ...

Love all kinds of stuff. Look forward to checking out suggestions around here. Wink

Hey, I'm a 20 year old college student at Gonzaga University in lovely, music deprived Spokane, Washington. I'll be a junior next year, edging ever closer to a degree in business. As far as music goes, it's pretty much my only hobby, both playing and listening. Given my screenname, Elliott Smith is obviously a big influence. Beyond ES, Modest Mouse, Radiohead, Yo La Tengo, Pavement, My Bloody Valentine, Pixies, and Sonic Youth have been relatively long time favs. If you care to know anything else, just ask.

Super idea, Mr. Chocolate!

I'm 19, from the UK, and a student of International Business and French.

Mainly into hip-hop, but listen to a fair bit of other stuff too. Smashing Pumpkins are my favourite group of all time. Favourite rappers / rap groups are Outkast, Jay-Z, Nas, Tha Dogg Pound, loads and loads of others. Listen to lots and lots of DJ Shadow, other stuff like RJD2, Chemical Brothers etc.

Thats about it...

This is mark f. I live behind the Orange Curtain (Orange County, CA) but I still manage to get news from the outside world. I just wrote an enormous autobio, but someone must have disapproved because I lost all my info and it didn't post. So now, I'm doing a shorter one. I'm the old man here at 48. I grew up in Compton, graduated from Lynwood High ('73) and UC Irvine ('77). I've worked as an editor for film reference books, a center air traffic controller and now, mostly as a public school teacher. I've been married over 16 years and have completely corrupted my wife and 13-year-old daughter with my music tastes. My favorite things to do are listen to new music, watch movies and try not to get too frustrated waiting for the Dodgers to win another World Series. I grew up with the Beatles, so I accept that as the reason for my love of rock and roll in all its mutations. Radiohead seems to be the closest thing we have nowadays comparable to the Beatles, a band that can turn out entertaining music while being visionary. As far as movies go, I can honestly say that "Jaws" and "Elmer Gantry" are the best movies ever made. Oh well, I better quit. Later, gators.

Hi,
Music and swimming are my loves. I also love to read and write. I have a Ph.D. in English literature from UCLA, but I'm not really the typical "english professor type." I teach full-time in the English Department at Long Beach City College. I have a few web sites - here is one: http://www.skidandkaren.com
I married a guitar player -- that says it all!

I'm a philosophy PhD student at Wash U in St Louis. I teach and work in ethics and political philosophy. I grew up in Minneapolis, was immersed in the MPLS music scene, moved to Georgia, drowned myself in the ATL/Athens scene, and then hit St Louis, which has a small but active alt-country scene, along with a HUGE hip-hop community.

I like a lot of different stuff, from power pop to alt-country, singer-songwriter to shoegaze. My collection of discs and albums is well over 5000, many of them dating from my days working in record stores. The only time I miss working retail i when I realize how many great promos I used to get...

I am an attorney working in an undisclosed American location (not Ann Arbor, which is my hometown and first love).

Aesthetically, I am a power pop junkie. I do however generally prefer well-developed lyrics to even the catchiest hooks. Thus my admiration for the likes of Tom Waits, Paul Westerberg, Gram Parker, Hayden etc.

Hey, my name is John, but I've gone by the nickname Raz for the better part of 10 years. I'm 27 and live on Long Island, NY

I grew up a rock kid (Van Halen, Def Leppard, etc.), and then REM's "The One I Love" changed my life, mostly because it wasn't like the rest of Dial MTV. I was the first one I knew who was into Pearl Jam & A Tribe Called Quest. In 1994, I bought the Rolling Stone Album Guide, and started spending my art college tuition on CDs. I obsessed over Led Zeppelin for a year, then cut my hair and listened to nothing but late 70's punk. I worked at a record store for 5 years (to the day), from 11/97 to 11/02; when I started I had 400 CDs. When I left I had 4000. My friends say I'm the blackest whiteboy they know, since I love 70's funk & soul, Prince, & know more about the history of Hip-Hop than most G-Unit fans.
My second musical obseesion is Queens of the Stone Age. I am also a huge fan of The Clash, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, DJ Shadow & Spoon.

I'm 20, a sociology student at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. I like all kinds of music -- my favourite acts right now being Radiohead, Beck, The Streets, Lucinda Williams, Sam Roberts, and Basement Jaxx. But this changes frequently. I used to play guitar, piano, bass, and trombone, but I've sort of set all that musical stuff aside as I'm more interested in writing my Honours thesis now and whatnot =P

I also love books, especially books to do with social history -- Foucault being one of the more obvious examples. We should have metascores for books!

Hi. I'm Andrew. 15. Student from Toronto. I only started really listening to music in 2001, and my first true album purchase was Bjork's Vespertine, and Bjork remains my favourite artist. My other favourites are Kate Bush, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Basement Jaxx, Sarah McLachlan, Sinead O'Connor, Erykah Badu and Me'shell Ndegeocello. If one looks at my CD collection, only about a third of them feature guitars, I'm definitely into the electronic side of things but I try anything.
Of my CDs, three-quarters are by female artists. Don't know why, but they are. I think they sound better, I guess.
I go to metacritic quite often. I know I shouldn't do this, but I've bought two albums based solely on ridiculously high metacritic scores- Van Lear Rose and Elephant. Of course, I wasn't sorry. Great albums, those.

Oh, and I'm the music columnist-to-be for the school newspaper. Quite a fun job.

Nice to meet you all!
