Religion, of course, is not God. Religion often has nothing at all to do with God. I think a simple reading of the bible will show that God doesn't even believe in "religion".

As I see it, mankind woke up one day and postulated a bunch of origin tales which featured powerful and inscrutable 'gods' to establish the sense of community and burgeoning self-awareness of homo sapien.

Thus religion, the codifying framework, satisfying the human need for order and temporal coherence has always incorporated god/s and the two cannot be separated in any serious historiographical sense.
