You're doing research on media ... and you've no idea what the FCC is? R i g h t ... quote: Also would you be able to tell me what you think about the ban on fast food adverts to children under 15 years of age?? Do you think it will help in reducing obesity in children?
Well, like I said in the beginning, it's certainly a start, but legislation is only one brick in the wall, so to speak. Is it bad? Of course not. Should it be all that's ever done. Of course not.

The original poster is in the UK. I don't think a lack of knowledge of US regulation of the airwaves merits your snark. Now Playing: "Cold Summer" Wolfgang Muthspiel Friendly Travelers

Perhaps if the original poster had stated that he/she were only interested in UK-based responses or respondents, then the confusion would've been alleviated (i.e. "I'm in the UK, I'm unaware of the FCC"). I don't see any indication of being in the UK in jess's public profile. quote: Originally posted by Ishmaels coffin: You gotta get out more son.
And, as long as we're pointing out 'snarks' ...

Ok, i did not realise i had to tell everyone where i was from, i wanted a broad range of opinions and may not have got that if i was just getting replies from the UK. That is why i did not know the ffc i know the british versions though which is all that matters.
I really appreciate your comments, they have been a great help to my research. Thanks again

I don't think banning advertisements is going to make a big dent in childhood obesity. Kids preferred candy to vegetables long before there was TV or radio.
A lot of the kids who are obese, you meet the parents and they are overweight too. That means the whole family is eating badly so it is the environment that is the problem not some cartoon character tempting the kid to do something wrong. They are being given the food by the parents - that is the problem.

You shouldn't have to, no. I was being singled out for not knowing, and I was taking issue with it. Now that I know why you don't know what the FCC is, it makes perfect sense. quote: Originally posted by Kione: I don't think banning advertisements is going to make a big dent in childhood obesity. So long as I'm concerned, therein lies the essential problem here. Look at the sugar content of even most baby food, and it isn't hard to understand where all of us got hooked on the sugar fiend. We're all junkies to it. Blaming the advertisers doesn't disguise the fact that it's a far greater problem. quote: A lot of the kids who are obese, you meet the parents and they are overweight too. Agreed.

hey Trek, my comment about getting out more was a very good natured jibe. I had a smiley face!! To actually take issue with what you are writing and your manner of doing so would take more time and energy than I have. So, have fun on metacritic, and don't read too much into little 'digs'.

No harm, no foul, honestly. It's the mod I took issue with. My observation about the FCC was also harmless but was labeled a 'snark.' I'm new here @ Metacritic, but I've always pointed out hypocrisy when I see it. It's just in my nature. Back to topic ...

As someone has already mentioned, I believe that so long as the advertisers follow the broadcasting rules that they are subject to, that that is all that they are responcible for. anything that doesnt break the rules is fair game.
I have had a personal history with obesity when i was younger. This problem was not caused at all by advertising, as i rarely watched T.V. as a kid, and more often than not was disgusted by first, any comercial that interrupted my cartoons, and second any comercial that was repeated more than once in a ten minute span. (which means that every McDonalds, BK, Wendy's, KFC, Popeye's, Arby's, etcetera, comercial made me less likely to want that particular companies product.) (unique idea... perhaps inorder to advertize a product, such as McDonalds, the comercial could flash the names of competetors in a very very annoying way for 90% of the airtime of the advertizement, and for the remaining 10% simply say the name of the company that is being advertized... just an idea) my problem was caused by anti depressant medications. i went from a 5'10 skinny as a stick with every rib visible kid, anad in 12 months time (luckally during my growth spurt) i exploded into a 6'2 and continued growing to 6'4, 270 lb giant.
my weight gain was hardly caused by eating fast food. more often than not we would eat at home. potroast, mashed potatoes, green beans, spagetti, chile + rice (its how i like my chile, dont question it, just nod and think im weird), gumbo, stew, and dont you ever forget steak and various other grilling favorites. just really awesome food that i doubt anyone would think is (abnormally) bad for you. the kicker in this is that i would probably eat about 2 times as much as my father at any one meal. at the time he was a full time home builder, weighed at least 250 lbs, 6'2", you know, big guy. and i was eating twice as much as he was every single day.
so, i think that if you want to reduce childhood obesity, you are going to need to take a MUCH broader view of the issue. advertisement (if you look at my example) sometimes doesnt even get factored into the equation. heck, i didnt even realize that all those funny comercials with that weird guy with red hair and clown makeup eating at mcdonalds was supposed to make me want to go there until i was maybe 9 or 10. seriously, i really did not want to meet that clown guy, or any fast food chain mascots for that matter. and by then i had already learned how to make most foods that i liked (and that were simple, Mac and cheese FTW) on the stove, oven, or microwave.
and in responce to trek about the obesity standard. i completely agree. after i recovered from the whole sudden weight gain situation, im not a perfect mass of rippling muscle. but, dont get me wrong, im by no means completely out of shape. i look like a mean green butt kicking machine (tmnt ftw!). but the weight that im at, compared with my height, i should have died from a massive heart attack 6 months ago according to the obesity charts.
