We've got a few other threads that have mentioned stand up comedy, so I thought I'd start this one up...anyone got a favorite stand up comic, comedy show, or record?
I've long been a supporter of live comedy, and I've seen such stars as Jon Stewart, Bobcat Goldthwait, Lewis Black, David Cross, and Bob Schimmel in the comedy clubs.
That list indicates some of my faves, along with Patton Oswald, Todd Barry, Greg Giraldo, and Greg Behrendt, among others.

Lewis Black, Robin Williams, Chris Rock, Jon Stewart, Dat Phan, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, Steve Martin, Dave Chappelle, and Dane Cook (Who was at the "Gator Growl", the biggest student set up "Pep-Rally" in the country) are some of my favorites. I love comedy, whenever I get the chance I always watch "Friday Night Stand-up" on Comedy Central and that keeps me entertained for the night. For some reason I find "Larry the Cable Guy" hilarious, he is one of the funniest acts that I have ever seen.

I have to second your choices of Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby (one of the great storytellers I've ever heard). I like Rock and Chappelle. I'm so-so on Robin Williams, whose manic energy I find a little off-putting.
I should also add some of the all-time greats: George Carlin, Bill Hicks, and Lenny Bruce.
And one current guy whose deadpan delivery and oddball humor makes me laugh my tail end off: Mitch Hedberg.

one thing I've always been curious about is Brian Posehn's Comedy Central Presents... special. I missed it and have never been lucky enough to catch a rerun of it. there's no questioning that he's a funny guy, but I wonder if he can do standup well. has anyone here seen it?

I haven't seen the Posehn special, but a friend who saw him open for David Cross said he was absolutely hilarious live. He's been very funny on all of the TV spots I've seen him in (on "Mr. Show" and as the weird mailroom guy on "Just Shoot Me") but I share your worry that his weird guy persona wouldn't translate live.
Patton Oswald is a prime example of the TV-persona not matching the standup routine: his bit role on "The King of Queens" (in my opinion, the only funny non-animated half hour sitcom on TV) is so bland and neutered that you'd think he was a hack comic, but his standup is so edgy and profane (but profanely funny!) that you'd think it was a different guy!

Chris Rock(saw him live-fabulous!), George Carlin, Jon Stewart, Dave Chappelle, early Robin Williams(only early!), Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, Margaret Cho, Lewis Black(who is performing here on a night I am djing, damn, damn, damn!). I respect anyone who can make themselves a success at stand-up comedy, what an excruciating career to choose!

If it's true, this is sad news. I reserve hope that it's some sort of tasteless April Fool's gag, but several sources (Howard Stern's radio show this morning, the Comedy Central website, and the St Paul Pioneer Press) are reporting that comedian Mitch Hedberg died in the last few days. Yeah it's pretty much been confirmed. I would have guessed a joke if it was just Howard Stern and Comedy Central reporting. It's really sad how the young brilliant ones go. He was just scheduled to do a show here too. I'm still crossing my fingers for that "April Fools!" announcement but that doesn't look very promising.
omg, i almost cried! I loved his acts..and i was going to get tickets to his next show!!! Then I went to the site where i purchase them, and it said "CANCELLED" all money will be refunded!

Rumors abound about his death (was he back on the drugs?) and his recent erratic behavior (cancelling 5 straight nights of shows at one club!) but his mother has said he was born with a heart defect that led to a heart attack.
sad stuff. He was brilliantly funny. They called him "the next Seinfeld" circa 2000, but he was really the next Steven Wright.
