I wonder if the Dodgers are in the A-rod sweepstakes, now that Torre and Mattingly seem to be headed that way? Maybe they could get Jorge and Mariano to come too!

The Dodgers certainly have the money. I don't know about Posada though. The Dodgers already have one of Baseball's best young catchers in Russell Martin. There's no way they'd get rid of him for a 37-yr-old Posada.

That's funny. I was just teasing, FKA. I don't think you're mean to Leland, I just think you hate him. I also don't think you're the first person to feel that way, either. He's not my master or leader, he's my_____________ <--- (insert something funny here) Heterosexual Life Partner -EG75.
Oh OK, cool.
As for the whole A-Rod circus, I could really care less where he lands. Wherever he goes, he will be the best player in the regular season and a huge star. I am actually a bit bitter because I thought he wanted to be a “real Yankee.” I guess he always knew he wasn’t going to come back and was just shoving it in front of everyone’s face, oh well. I like what Conan O’Brien said yesterday as he was doing SAT synonyms:
New York in 2004: Welcome, A-Rod New York in 2007: Goodbye, A-hole.

I was totally joking. I can't see Posada or Mariano anywhere else.

I just read that the Tigers are trying to acquire Marlins 3B Miguel Cabrera. If that happens, the Tigers will in fact have the sickest lineup in Baseball. Seriously, you could see a team average of over .300.
Still, I cannot figure out why Dave Dombrowksi is so keen on building up the Tigers offense, when we still have the same below average pitching staff we had last year. If the Marlins trade happens, Dontrelle Willis would likely come over too, but that dude was 10-15 with a 5.17 ERA last season. The Tigers have minor league prospects that can pitch that good.

The Royals signed Jose Guillen today for a $36 mill - 3 year deal... so watch out, Tampa Bay, . He's the highest paid Royals player in their history. Reportedly he spent $20,000 on steroids and human growth hormones in 03-05. I can only hope those reports are true.

I'm not sure about that trade. Cabrera's certainly a good pickup, but the Tigers gave up a lot. Six players including top prospects Andrew Miller and Cameron Maybin, backup catcher Mike Rabello and closer prospect Eulogio De La Cruz.
One thing is for certain, the Tigers batting will crush all other teams.
Here's what their lineup looks like right now, followed by their 2007 batting average:
1B Carlos Guillen - .296 2B Placido Polanco - .341 SS Edgar Renteria - .332 3B Miguel Cabrera - .320 C Pudge Rodriguez - .281 RF Magglio Ordonez - .363 CF Curtis Granderson - .302 LF Jacque Jones - .285 DH Gary Sheffield - .265
So yeah, the guy with the lousiest average is f**ing Gary Sheffield.
I think Dombrowski's plan is to hope that they can drive in so many runs, a pitching staff that had a collective 4.57 ERA last year won't be much of a problem.
I wonder what will become of Brandon Inge. Although he isn't a good hitter, he's really fantastic at fielding 3rd. He started out as a catcher, but I'd be surprised to see them move him back to that position. My guess is trade bait for some more relievers. Who's shopping for a third baseman?

Sheff is clearly in decline. It looks like the Red $ox are in the lead as far as the Santana sweepstakes. I think I read that Hank $teinbrenner pulled the plug on any possible deal. Personally, I'm not sure that Johan is worth what the Twins are asking for either team. I'd rather keep the youngsters and see what happens. Of course, it's hard to argue with adding the best left-handed arm to the best pitching staff in baseball.

Sheff was stellar the first half of last year, but his shoulder problems killed him the second half. He was batting .300 before the All-Star break. Hopefully he's back to normal after his off-season shoulder surgery. He is pushing 40 though.

Ahh shiiiit, David Riske signed with the Brewers for three years. F***!!!!! I can only hope that the Royals are able to get Hiroki Kuroda, since the rest of the free agent pool is crap.
What is going to happen to Bonds? I don't understand why any team would want to pick up his salary given the troubles he will likely have outside of baseball. I know it's slim pickings for hitters though.

I guess none of this will come as a surprise, but still this is more definitive evidence to speculation. Names have been named, all hell shall break loose right? I'll leave the discussion up to someone else.
Just came across this beauty on page 99 of the report (skimmed the contents section and skipped to this, do not worry, I don't have time to read 99 pages of this stuff):
quote:
According to Hallinan’s memo, Perez told baseball officials “. . . that virtually every player on the Marlins was ‘doing something’ ranging from steroids and greenies, to marijuana, etc. He also claimed that every pitcher in Montreal’s bullpen was on some form of steroid.
I think if this had come out in December of 1998, I might have given a shit. As it is, I've already made peace with the Steroid issue.

Ditto. I don't think most of us were all that shocked to see a lot of those names on the list. When you see some of these guys having career years in their late 30s and early 40s, is it really a shock to learn they've had some help? Often in the form of a butt injection?

It did reinforce my suspicions(and presumably anybody else who remembers) about that Orioles team a few years ago. They started off the season tearing through the league, built up a decent lead in the AL East, and then suffered a colossal collapse that coincided almost exactly with the moment Palmeiro got caught.
Members on that team: Larry Bigbie Jay Gibbons Brian Roberts Miguel Tejada Jason Grimsley I think there were a few others in the report that I left off(I can't remember if Jerry Hairston or David Segui were still on the team). I'm surprised Melvin Mora wasn't on the list.
