Or maybe it is just that you are much more intelligent than I. Which I think is most certainly a possibility.
It's funny that you say that, Mike, because I teach at both a Top Fifteen undergradaute institution and a very good liberal/performing arts school and I've never felt any pressure to mandate to my students any AMOUNTS of reading and writing. I've always been of the opinion that it's not the QUANTITY of work but the QUALITY of work that matters, but sometimes it hard to teach students to write well without forcing them to go through many drafts of papers and pick each draft apart until they get it right. Some people are better writers than others, to be sure, but even those who aren't great writers can put good work together without much difficulty, if they get some guidance. For me, the goal of my Intro level courses is to make sure that my students have better critical reading and reasoning skills and better writing skills. If they learn some philosophy as they go, all the better.
I did AP test out of many of the intro level courses (English, History, Poli Sci) and those are the kinds of courses where homework is more likely given. I recall doing homework in my math classes (statistics and college algebra) and my foreign languages. And I certainly wrote a LOT of papers, but I didn't take that many exams or have required homework for most of my collegiate life. I wasn't implying that I didn't do a lot of WORK...only that I didn't do much required homework. The reading and paper load was pretty heavy, particularly in my junior year.

Yeah, but the community college that I attend implements the Gordon Rule which is
quote:Mandated by the Florida State Board of Education, the Gordon Rule requires students to demonstrate college level communication and computation skills through the completion of course work in English and Mathematics. Students must complete a minimum of 30,000 words of writing in courses from the disciplines of Communications, Humanities, and Social and Behavioral Sciences. Students must complete Gordon Rule courses with grades of 'C' or better.
And now the University of Florida is being required to start standardized testing before one can graduate.

Freakin' BCS... Allowing Texas to "lobby" for the Rose Bowl, while Cal made the classy move of taking a knee at their end of their game instead of running up the score. what a load of crap.

Yeah it is. But you can't blame the teams that run up the score, the BCS forces them to do so. Yeah Cal made a respectable move and it is unfortunate that things have to go this way. Where is our freakin' playoff?

I would equate the college presidents, those a-holes behind the BCS, to the Saudi royal government. It's not a democracy, they keep making tons of money at the expense of their constituents, and the "little guys" keep getting screwed year after year. One of these years, the Rose Bowl is going to take themselves out of the equation, and it's all going to come crumbling down.

Wow. I'm not sure how that word limit gets enforced, as a total...I guess each department tells its instructors to assign a specific word count.
I understand the premise. I'm just not sure setting an arbitrary word count (why 30,000? Why not 50,000? Or 10,000?) is the way to ensure that each person has "college level skills."

I guess that I shall post what I want for Christmas here as suggested by Mark. I want MONEY!!! I guess that is greedy, but I don't exactly celebrate the whole Christmas scene just the buying stuff and giving stuff part. I want enough money to buy a laptop computer, it would be really useful.

My heart's desire is to become a famous actress for film and television, to meet Desmond Harrington, and tell him that he inspired me, and to win a SAG award.

Given your various signatures and your heart's desire, I have to ask: who is Desmond Harrington and has he filed a restraining order against you yet?
Just kidding on the last one...not on the first one, though. I have no idea who Desmond Harrington is...

Oddly enough, after I posted my query Cabin Fever came on HBO and I saw the name Desmond Harrington there, as well. I don't know which character he was...
Hmm...an agent spamming our Forums? Interesting thought. I hope it's not true.

It's been a long time, and I imagine the standards have changed, but I don't recall ever having more than a half-hour's worth of homework a night in high school. And I went to a pretty good public school system in the suburbs of the Twin Cities.
I can honestly say that for the last 3 and a half years of high school I had no homework whatsoever. I got all I needed to get done during class. The only reason I learned much of anything in high school is because I read stuff on my own during study hall (80-90 minutes) and study mod (45 minutes). I didn't go to a bad school, it was just an average high school for our area in Indiana. No AP courses. If it weren't for the SAT I wouldn't have even had a chance at getting into a good school. Of course, I ended up leaving the really good school I was at (twice), and now I'm at a crappy college, so I guess it didn't matter either way.
Getting back to the topic here, my heart's latest desire is...well, I can't really think of anything positive. I just want my gut to stop hurting me every day, and graduate from college in a couple years.
