I was seriously concidering getting one of those incredibly fuel effecient mopeds. but today I was looking up the licensing laws and it said that anything bigger than a 50cc is concidered a "motorcycle." I was concidering a 150cc and than I found some that were 250cc for around the same price. Then, I checked out how to get a motorcycle licence and it seemed like a lot of work. Pretty much getting your licence all over again. And I'm under 18 so I'd have to take classes. So does anyone have any alternatives or suggestions or whatnot? I can't afford a car (and something with horrible MPG). I can afford like $2,000 at the most which is more or less what a decent moped would be. I live in Maryland.

If you can stand the constant ribbing from your friends, the only things I would worry about would be driving in bad weather and driving on the highway, especially at night.
Edit: Also taking girls on dates, they may not dig it.

I spend a lot of time in a college town and those scooters are all over the place. If you don't plan on going on any major (fast moving) roads or highways then the 49cc scooters they make could be a good choice in that there is no need for a motorcycle license (at least in Florida) or insurance. Otherwise, you might want to consider a smallish motorcycle. From what I understand the courses required to get your motorcycle license aren't really all that excessive, so I wouldn't worry about that. The main issue is if you would feel safe leaving yourself unprotected on the streets against cell phone carrying soccer moms in their Hummers. I mean, for $2,000 you should be able to get a small car. Sure it's going to be old, but if you find a privately owned car with low miles, that would be a much better and more practical bet than any two-wheeler. Another option is using that $2,000 as a down payment on a slightly more expensive car.
Good luck and drive safely.

yeah, a 49cc would'nt work out cuz I would want it to go to school on and one of the roads has no shoulder and it like 50mph. I guess a small car would work good and i don't care how old it is (within reason) but I would want something with reasonable MPG. that's one thing that attracted me to mopeds like this one.
