I work in a shopping Plaza, and almost every day I buy my lunch from a food court or Supermarket which means I have to quite often walk through an array of advertisement stands manned by people who yell out to me and try to spark a conversation with me so that I may eventually buy into whatever it is they’re selling.

I’ve tried a couple of things to prevent them from trying to make contact with me, sometimes I wear sunglasses to prevent them from making eye contact, other times I pretend like I’m on the phone, I’ve found this is the most effective solution, HOWEVER sometimes I don’t see them until it’s too late, sometimes even when I’m on the phone they still try to talk to me! Seriously, like the big sign displaying that they’re selling tiles isn’t enough for me to be enticed if I was actually already interested in buying tiles. Sometimes they’re just trying to do market research, which is even worse!

I’m a pretty tolerant person, but there is no way in HELL that I could EVER do that job. I feel conflicted because part of me knows these people are being payed to do this, and they probably hate it is much as I do but they’re only trying to do their job because some jerk ass employer is pushing them to sell to people who don’t want to buy, and through a means of which people like me don’t want to be bothered through.

Am I the only one who is angered! Feel free to laugh at me if I’m just being ridiculously over dramatic, but it happened to me again today while I was at lunch, and I wanted to vent!

Here I am in my room listening to that Okkervil River covers album and I just started laughing out loud to myself. Boy, that is hilarious. I don’t know what you look like but picturing someone quickly walk by some pestering people while wearing sunglasses indoors and pretending to be on the phone is just so funny. So do you just nod and say “uh huh” and “yeah, sounds good”? Haha!

Well regardless, I had a rough day today and you just made my day end pretty well, thanks. Smiler

Actually that's EXACTLY what I do, I’ll do almost anything to avoid them making contact with me, because once that happens, it’s an endless struggle between man and ‘Advert Henchman’, they just won’t accept that I’m not interested past that point of contact. The funny thing is, when I fake being on the phone, part of me wonders if they know that I’m faking it, part of me wonders if people everywhere do this to them all the time, and that they know what’s going because it’s like ‘the oldest trick in the book’ or something like that.

You're welcome Smiler, next time you're walking past some advertisement stand, I hope you remember this, in fact, I hope you begin laughing hysterically every time you see one, which will be even funnier, because they will try to talk to you, and you won’t be able to help but laugh in their face!

I can’t be the only one here who has ever done something crazy to avoid something or someone, it doesn’t have to be an ‘Advertisement Stand’, it could be anything, Cough up your stories!

Mitch, take it away...

Whenever I walk, people try to hand me out flyers. And when someone tries to hand me out a flyer, it's kinda like they're saying "Here, you throw this away."

Yeah, man. People are assholes. You'll find people selling the product that actually make the chance of you actually buying the product from minimal to zero by simply being assholes. But the worst crap in the world is when the asshole is the customer. It's not like you can just walk away or something cuz they might complain to your boss and exaggerate and blame it all on you. I've had to raise my voice to so many people while working. I hate assholes. Whenever one is difficult with me in my head I'm like, "In here I have to respect you cuz it's my job, but I swear to God, after I get off work, if you're still around...you won't want to be"
