OK, does anyone have anything to say about Metacritic being bought by C-NET? I don't know much about C-NET, though I thought it was owned by Microsoft or something. The press release and the note from the editors didn't really explain much. Will there be advertisements now? Pop-ups? And what are the reasons for C-NET wanting Metacritic? What exactly will change? Does C-NET have any stake in any movie, music, book, video game, or television show companies? It seemed like all the editor's note said is that Metacritic will continue to be good. Any thoughts? Insights?

Actually, CNET is definitely NOT owned by Microsoft. It is a publicly-traded company that runs a few dozen different websites (mainly focusing on technology, games and entertainment). The do not have any stake in movie, games, or other entertainment producers; instead, their philosophy--like ours--is to provide as much information to consumers as possible to help them make informed decisions about how to spend their money and time.

And actually, in theory we have always had advertisements on the site--it's just that the folks selling our ad space weren't always doing a noticeable job of it. We should actually have better-quality ads than what we've had in the past, and for now, they will occupy the same spots that our current ads do. I don't anticipate ever seeing any popups on metacritic, but I don't want to say "never" just in case it does happen someday (let's just call it "not likely").

Ads only bother me when they flash or move around a lot. Because those...really draw your attention when you're trying to read the actual content of the site.

Actually, the ads that bother me more than anything are the ones that make noise. Those should be outlawed.

Yeah, those are the worst. I also hate artists' websites that play music while you browse the site (Fiery Furnaces). I'm almost always listening to other music while I'm at these sites, so I inevitably leave immediately.

I play discs on an actual CD player and very rarely use my computer for music. In fact, my speakers aren't even plugged in, and I always use headphones when I listen to music on my computer. So sound ads very rarely bug me.

Actually the worst ads are the flash ones that actually cover up the screen and MOVE WITH the screen when you're scrolling. Those are just obnoxious. But as for banner ads, it's the flashing ones.

I go to other sites owned by C-Net all the time, and have never had problems with pop-ups. There have been annoying adds on GameFAQs occasionaly, but after enough complaints (enough to, presumably, get the attention of the guy who runs the site) they are removed.

I reserve the right to be entirely wrong.
