I never liked the somewhat recent use of the term "rock star" to mean "popular" or anything in that ballpark. It sounded like a cliche the first time I heard it. Now, many months later, I'm hearing political pundits at both conventions referring to John Edwards, Barak Obama, Zell Miller, and, earlier today, Bill Clinton as "rock stars." NO. They are NOT rock stars.
First of all, do you think most of these people are even fans of "rock" to even know what the essence of a "rock star" is??? Is Zell Miller, the 80-year-old former Governor of Georgia really a lot like Axl Rose or Lenny Kravity or the dork from ColdPlay?? Even if he were, would Chris Matthews or Andrea Mitchell be able to verify this fact with any credibility???
And why "rock star"?? Why not "country-western star"?? Considering who's been using the expression lately, why not "NASCAR Driver"??
Bottom line: Anybody who ever thought that using the term "rock star" to describe people who don't actually play rock music was COOL or HIP or EDGIE -- stop it!
