Is Metroid Prime basically the same gameplay as Zelda TP?
From what I see, the puzzles look fairly similar, and the structure... platform-style dungeon, fight a mid-boss, get a power, unlock a new area, fight a boss - seems the same.

I see what you're saying, having played TP (both versions) and currently playing Corruption now.
The gameplay is somewhat alike, but IMHO this series (Prime) has always followed Zelda in a way, allbeit more advanced. The artwork is kind of in the same vein that Wind Waker started and we saw again in TP, not a bad thing, again this is a different game - so it really doesn't come off as a clone.
Bottom line is this game is great, it makes me want a wiimote controlled verion of the original and Echoes (one of my fav games ever). A must buy if you own a Wii, yeah - there are hints of Zelda in there - but it's bigger, faster, smoother and features some of the best boss fights.
It is nice to see how the story is coming together in Corruption and bringing it all together.
I’m currently playing Metroid Prime Corruption at the moment (which is panning out to be awesome btw) and I can see what you mean, it is similar in the way that it plays a bit more like an adventure game as apposed to a first person shooter, however, I think the only reason you get that feeling from it is because there is more to the game then just shoot em up tactics, because the levels require allot of puzzle solving and you have more then one type of weapon, which is similar to a Zelda game, but apart from that, it’s completely different, and I would still consider it a first person shooter, just mixed with a whole lot of adventure, which makes the game really enjoyable.
Imagine all my posts as if they were being read to you by Christopher Walken

Is Metroid Prime 3 an adventure game like Zelda (where it is possible to get lost in some area because it's not clear what to do next) or is it linear like Red Steel (where you can't get off track because your next mission is clear)?

Adventure game. You can and will get lost or not know what to do, but the environments are so rich in detail, and the game rewards you for exploration so thoroughly, that you don't care.
I prefer it to Zelda because it has much better pacing, more interesting environments, and better control. So, if you haven't picked this up yet: shame. on. you.
