Alright gaming friends, I have a question. How much is the new Animal Crossing like the GC and the DS games? I absolutely love the GC game (am playing it through again with the missus, as a matter of fact), but have not played the DS one. I've heard that the Wii game basically takes the DS template and adds a few random items here and there.
Truth? Lies? Help! I don't want to pay 50 bucks for a game that I already own!

Well everything I'm going to say is coming from someone that has played both previous versions.
Wild World was such an improvement over the Cube version IMHO, I hated how the cube version had the 'grid' style map movement, this was eliminated in favour of the scrolling world in WW - much better...one trade off - no holidays or NES collectibles in WW.
However WW really opened up a new avenue - online. I can't say enough how much more fun it adds to the game when you've got a few other like minded people playing along with you - the fishing contests, visiting other residents and general chat...all very cool.
I found the music in the cube version a bit subdued, again this was corrected in WW, the music is upbeat and more lively.
CF combined all the great elements of both games into one with some extra stuff as well. Online, holidays, town upgrades...yes....town upgrades (won't spoil anything)....
So if you have enjoyed any previous version, you will enjoy this outing....however to what degree depends on how 'into' the series you are. As a general package, this is the best AC to date. For someone like me who played a bit of the cube version and stopped - but has played WW for two years straight...City Folk is going to provide numerous hours of entertainment.
The WiFi really makes a diff, my wife and I both have a DS with WW and share a town in City Folk - we game with other gamers over 25 years of age...and have a blast.
I skipped wiispeak, but do have a keyboard on the wii...using the wiimote to text enter....no fun.
Did I mention playing hide and seek with the residents?
See... I LOVE the Cube version, but I never played the DS version. I heard the upgrade wasn't sufficient enough if I'd thoroughly played through the Cube version (except for the online bits). However, your explanation of City Folk intrigues me. You actually talk about different parts of the game, unlike the majority of reviews which say it's basically the same old, same old.
Not sure if I'm willing to shell out 50 bucks for it (especially as my Wii is not currently hooked up to the Intarweb), but I'm definitely gonna check it out.
Thanks again! Anybody else is free to chime in also.

This game is [B]very[B] like the game for the ds, except there are a few differences and extras. E.G: You can now go to the city. But i still think the game is very well thought through!!
Well, after putting in some time playing here's some updated impressions -
No animal pics to collect. This is a huge bummer, as it is really a goal to shoot for...and the omission of the pics makes me wonder why there is even an affinity meter for the residents. Aside from keeping your favorite resident from moving...why bother talking to them??
No NES games...again. There's really no excuse for this - sure you could argue the fact that Nintendo does not want to cannibalize VC title sales, but they could have easily had an item that would enable you to play VC (NES / SNES titles) on your TV in your house.
The grass. It wears so much faster than it grows. While I love having the paths and I've realized the paths need to be bigger width-wise than what I originally wanted, but they still look great...problem is that in building the paths, other areas get worn, and they just don't grow back very fast at all. It kind of leaves the town looking a bit ugly. A quicker regrowth cycle, or the option to buy grass seeds and sow them...well...IMHO -that'd be cool.
Graphics. Now I like the graphics, and can roll with them...if there were more features in the game...such as listed above. Also - it would have been really sweet to enable CF players to register WW players and visit the WW towns and even visit GAmecube towns via the memory card...surely the graphical power being used in City Folk is not so advanced it eats up all the power the Wii has, so why not give more features?
The auction house...so.......you can have 4 people living in town, yet only one person can place an item up for auction.....aaannnnnnddddd only one person in town can place a bid when the auction is open. Makes PERFECT sense to me. *roll* Kind of a waste and hey that brings me to another point, turnips.
Turnips can no longer be stored on tables. So you will HAVE to sell them even if your prices suck, and your friends prices suck. That isn't cool - I had to spend over 100k to learn this lesson and then confirm it with other players.
While this is still IMHO the best version of AC to date, there's a ton of oversights and the feeling I'm getting is that Nintendo really is/was holding back on some of these features for another title. Like they didn't have the money to invest in it. What a joke.
You would ask the guard by the gate for your friend code.
As for the auction house I'm pretty sure your registered friends (that youve already visited with) can see your items for sale and you see theirs for sale. That's what I'm told anyway, if so though none of my friends ever put anything for auction.

Oh I understand man, really I do. For me though - City Folk ruined the experience. After years of having fun in Wild World, this is a shameful shell of what could have been.
