Despite breaking sales records and being talked about all over the place, I feel that 2007 has been a very disappointing year for the Wii in terms of games releases. Sure, it takes a while for a platform to mature, but right now, today, there are really very few excellent games available.

This year I got a Wii as a birthday present, and it's only in the past couple of months that I've done anything with it other than play virtual console games. There's just nothing excellent out there right now. No wonder (apparently) 67% of Wii owners don't use the console. I am almost one of that 67% despite being a big Nintendo fan.

What do you feel about the Wii's 2007 and how do you see things panning out in 08? Obviously a couple of big titles will be out for xmas.

Were the Wii games really that bad? I think you are forgetting all consoles have a pretty weak first year. Add to that that almost no third party developers were on board for the beginning of the wii (hence the rushed shovelware and drought we are finally coming out of), and only became believers through the year. Look at the metacritic scores for this gen's first year:

Wii:
Mario Galaxy
Wii Sports
Wii Play
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Mario Party 8
Super Paper Mario
Wario Ware: Smooth Moves
Rayman Raving Rabbids
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition

PS3:
Resistance: Fall of Man
Motorstorm
Madden NFL 08
Madden NFL 07
Fight Night Round 3
Need for Speed: Carbon
Call of Duty 3
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
NCAA Football 08
Spiderman: The Movie 3

X360: (approx, can't find first year only-list)
Gears Of War
Madden NFL 07
Call of Duty 2
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Tom Clancy Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Guitar Hero II
Tom Clancy Rainbow Six: Vegas
Call of Duty 3
Fight Night Round 3
Dead Rising

Wii sure beats PS3, and PS3 had developers on board (coming off the success of the biggest selling console ever, the PS2).

As far as "killer apps" go, Wii is now equal to where 360 was in it's first year: 4 titles, three of which are ports of PC games released a few months earlier, or in the Wii's case, two Gamecube games.

360 still had better rated games overall, with lots of games in the 8s, but the Wii has just as many top rated killer apps.

With games like FFCC, NiGHTS, No More Heroes, Super Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Kart, and Tales of Symphonia 2 coming next year, Wii will hopefully see something similar to the 360's explosion of games in it's second year, although I doubt it will be as large.

This summer was pretty dry on the Wii, but on the one year anniversary things are coming together. I don't thinks it reasonable to get AAA games every month, and we all know how summers are for games.

Overall, within one year of being launched - we got a huge Zelda, Metroid Prime, major Mario, along with an awesome collection of VC titles and a whole host of other good games.

I have 10 or so Wii games, not including all the VC titles or the Cube games I picked up on the cheap this year that I missed out on.

IMHO - the Wii is delivery in spades, especially right now. Long term? Don't know - we'll see how it goes coming out of the holidays.

Considering most of the VG industry had ZERO faith in Nintendo or the Wii at launch and how long it takes to develop high quality games, I'm actually surprised the first year was this good. Imagine with the user base on the way to 20,000,000 Wii owners worldwide by early '08 how much development is going on now. I think there are good things coming.

Good points, guys, but for me, I had hoped that by the end of year 1 there would've been a few awesome Wii titles that take advantage of the new hardware.

I do agree with you that there's a lot of potential for 2008 titles to really rock. Although I am slightly worried that there's going to be a lot of lighter, family friendly titles, instead of a good, meaty, complex and long lasting, highly replayable games. I do like the Touch Generations things for the DS, though.

There are only 4 titles with a score of 90 or more on metacritic (my definition of an excellent game), and of those 2 are FPS types, which are hardly revolutionary despite being controlled by the remote. Light gun shooting goes back to the 80s for me, and doesn't excite me. Unfortunately, Zelda games have never grabbed me for some reason, so I haven't tried that one.

I will be picking up Mario Galaxy and expect it to be tremendous, so that is the one highlight of the year for me as far as Wii goes. I guess I was just hoping for something more, something new and exciting that pushes the boundaries. Endless Ocean was a good try, but not quite there.

Of the rest of the top 10 Wii titles, I already have Paper Mario for the cube, have Guitar Hero II for the 360, bought Smooth Moves, and got Lego Star Wars for the 360 (ok it's number 11, but let's not quibble).

I did consider picking it up for the Wii, but the Wii enhancements were minimal and obviously graphics are better for the 360. Not that graphics are everything/anything in a game, but why go for the second best option, especially when the price is the same. That's one problem for me - I will not be getting games for Wii that are published on other next gen consoles, unless the Wii specific features are well implemented.

Well, seems all good to me, you've got a 360 also? So time will tell what happens on Wii.

I keep waiting for that RE2 remake for Wii to pop up any day since we aren't getting 5. Yup, keep foolishly waiting. Don't know where that came from. Oh yeah....my aching heart. LOL

To be 100% honest, I don’t play ANY of my consoles until a specific game that I've been wanting to play comes out, whether it is PS or Nintendo. So far I’ve only played LOZ Twilight Princess, Wii Sports, and I am currently playing Metroid Prime Corruption, so I guess in the 6 months I have owned the Wii I have only played 3 games, HOWEVER! I am getting Mario Galaxy in a week, so this will mean this year Nintendo will have released at least 3 AAA class games which is a pretty damn good year for me.

I can’t really say I have ever experienced anything as “new” as the Wii mote, it can be anything you want, a steering wheel, a gun etc. As far as I’m concerned, when it comes to first person shooters, the Wii mote is the next best thing from using an actual key board and mouse, if not better. I can’t STAND playing first person shooters on hand controllers, I don’t get why the X-Box is so popular for it, although the 360 controller is allot more tolerable then the original X-Box controller which was the most awkward thing I have ever used in my life.

Metroid Prime Corruption is essentially a first person shooter, and it’s panning out to be pretty awesome. Perhaps you should give that a red hot go.

Well, Mario Galaxy is good...at least.

Oh, and I guess Zelda, but that's just a GC port...
