Good job, Brian, jumping in on your first day. I hope I don't scare you with my response, but I'll keep it as short as I can. Most of these are older, but it's easy enough to research them if you want to. If you want a personal explanation, come back here. Please forgive me if I've mentioned these too often at other sites.
All the Charlie Chaplin films, especially The Kid, The Gold Rush, The Circus, City Lights, Modern Times, The Great Dictator, and Monsieur Verdoux. All the Buster Keatons, especially Three Ages, Our Hospitality, Sherlock, Jr., The General, College, Steamboat Bill, Jr. and The Cameraman. All the Harold Lloyds, especially Safety Last, Why Worry?, Girl Shy, Hot Water, The Freshman, For Heaven's Sake, The Kid Brother and Speedy.
Pygmalion (& My Fair Lady if you enjoy musicals)
Heaven Can Wait (1943)-probably the most- romantic comedy ever made (with apologies to KT since Breakfast at Tiffany's is pretty damned romantic and Two For the Road too, in an acidic sort of way) All the Alec Guinness comedies, especially Kind Hearts and Coronets, Last Holiday, The Lavender Hill Mob, The Man in the White Suit, The Promoter, The Captain's Paradise, The Detective, The Ladykillers, The Horse's Mouth and Our Man in Havana. The Importance of Being Earnest (1952 and 2002) The Quiet Man Hobson's Choice The Trouble With Harry Some Like it Hot One, Two, Three Lover Come Back (1961) Tom Jones- sexiest comedy, and it's 40 years old! Dr. Strangelove The Graduate Support Your Local Sheriff! Harold and Maude Play it Again, Sam American Graffiti The Sting Young Frankenstein Monty Python and the Holy Grail The Bad News Bears Richard Pryor Live in Concert The Wanderers Tootsie Diner Victor/Victoria Gremlins Back to the Future Ruthless People Who Framed Roger Rabbit A Fish Called Wanda Bull Durham Gremlins 2 Forrest Gump
Although the following may be considered dramas, they're definitely among the funniest films of all-time: Casablanca, All About Eve, Sunset Blvd., North By Northwest, The Apartment, Elmer Gantry, The Manchurian Candidate, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Bonnie and Clyde, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Midnight Cowboy, Little Big Man, Joe, Cabaret (also best musical ever), Sleuth, Three/Four Musketeers (70s),Jaws, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Dog Day Afternoon, Lies My Father Told Me, Next Stop, Greenwich Village, Star Wars, An American Werewolf in London, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Bugsy, Pulp Fiction, Total Recall, My Father's Glory (my wife's vote for most romantic film ever) and Fight Club. There are some hilarious musicals, but I'll just say Singin' in the Rain, A Hard Day's Night and Mary Poppins. As far as animation: A Bug's Life, Toy Story/Toy Story 2, Allegro non Troppo and Triplets of Belleville.
Hopefully, someone will get something out of this. These are my favorite comedies, so give them a shot. You won't be disappointed.
EDIT- Sorry this thing keeps getting bigger.

"Out for Justice" by Steven Seagal made me laugh like no other movie. Its as if the film is a giant parody of itself.
As for comedies, my top two are Spinal Tap and Life of Brian, though I think Good Morning Vietnam is a really underrated comedy. I mean, how many non-corny movies can make people laugh and feel sad?

I can't believe it, Mark F, but I have somthing to add to your comprehensive list. "The Thin Man" movies. Make sure to watch with a drink in hand, because they drink so much in the movies you'll have to get and up make youself a drink if you don't already have one.
Also, we just watched "The Awful Truth" and that was great too. it has my new favorite Hollywood dog, and there are some really classic scenes as the ex-wife and husband try to simultaneously ruin each other's lives and win each other back.

I've seen all the Thin Man movies and "The Awful Truth", and what's awesome, just in case you didn't notice, is that "Asta" was the dog in "Thin Man" and "Awful Truth." I know that you love William Powell ("My Man Godfrey" with the adorable Carole Lombard is probably my favorite Powell, although a few years later, he was incredible in "Life With Father.") Did you see "My Favorite Wife", not really a sequel to "The Awful Truth", but with Cary Grant and Irene Dunne, and directed by the same guy, Leo McCarey ("Going My Way".) I think you'd enjoy that one too. I always love to hear from you, KT!

No! I haven't seen that one ... I'll have to add it to my Netflix queue.

I also forgot Dumb and Dumber and not the second one!
and thats for my pg-13 catagory!!
So you like dumb and Dumber then? That film is soooooooooo funny, there is real chemistry between Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey. One of my favourites comedies of all time
Anyway, my favourite comedies include: Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, The man with 2 brains, The Odd Couple, Way out West, Groundhog Day, Tommy Boy, Beverly Hills Ninja...
I know a lot of people who didn't like this film, but for me Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back truly kills me every time! Maybe it's due to my constant state of inebriation every time I watch it, but those guys really crack me up.

"If it were beneficial, their father would produce children already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become profitable in every respect." -Jesus, from the Gospel Of Thomas
In terms of making me laugh out loud, my all-time favorite comedies are:
1. Raisin' Arizona 2. Repo Man 3. There's Something About Mary
In terms of "comedy as art", then I would say it's "Annie Hall", which is my favorite all-time film. Also if we go "comedy as art", I would have to say "Fargo" and Chaplin's "City Lights".

Haha, yeah that was quite a list. I felt like reading it to the tune of "We didn't start the fire" (probably would have worked perfectly).
But anyway, why would someone have a "messed up sense of humor" if they found Pulp Fiction funny? All of the dialogue in that movie is insanely funny!
"YEAH BUT WHAT ABOUT THE RAPE SCENE YOU SICK F*CK??"
Haha, that scene was in fact HILARIOUS! Just look at the way the situation was presented! A huge black gangster gets pummeled in the ass by a gay cop (who also happens to keep a "gimp" locked in a cellar as his sex toy) as his partner masturbates and sweats profusely from his face while watching the ass-rape take place; and all of this is happening while this ridiculous music is being played in the background!!
Rape in itself is not funny, but when it's presented in such a ludicrous way, you can't help but laugh, no matter how sick it may seem.
Did you laugh when Coyote was crushed by an anvil? You did?? YOU SICK BAST*RD!!
You see what I mean? Rape and being crushed by a large metal object alone are not funny, but when presented in the right context, they can lead to laughter.

There is no doubt in my mind that "what about bob?" is not only one of the funniest movies of all time. But one of the Most underrated comedies of all time.

Very true! I saw this film like a week ago and even though it wasn't hilarious it was very enjoyable and better quality than most comedies! Bill Murray was very good and Richard Dreyfuss, as ever, was brilliant. Definitely underrated...
