I consider The Big Lebowski to be a classic. Perhaps the best comedy ever made.

I don't like how markf has pidgeonholed the movie as some sort of 20 something stoner flick. That's a copout and it kind of irks me, but I digress.

It is one of the most complete movies ever made imo. Flawless acting, excellent script. Perfect character development. You've got social commentary, a storyline that moves along wonderfully with scenes that I can't imagine being more entertaining.

And I like the fact that The Big Lebowski, the one in the wheelchair is gonna be the grandfather of the Dude's child. Classic movie if ever there were one.

I didn't say it appealed to stoners (though it does). I meant it had a stoner aesthetic! I also know that the cult which loves it consists of twentysomethings, but that's neither here nor irksome there.

Wheelchair guy is a direct lift from The Big Sleep.

Explain yourself damnit!!!

NOTE: Though it should be obvious to most, it warrants mentioning that the above quote was fabricated. The comments attributed to mark f were neither spoken, implied, nor supported by mark f. Have a nice day.

It's pretty sad now that we have to explain our jokes because some people won't get them...but me personally, I like to wear a "Do Not Disturb" sign around my neck so that little kids can't tell me knock-knock jokes.

Markf, i've noticed that yours and fragilekida's posts are all strongly vaginal. The word itself makes some men uncomfortable. Vagina.

A stoner aesthetic? No kidding, I've only seen the movie about 200 times, I know exactly the aesthetic is has. And I will go so far as to say that the cult following consists more of 30 somethings rather than 20 somethings.

But we can agree to disagree. Eventhough I'm more likely right and you're more likely wrong. But that is neither here nor there.

Hey hudson, I hope you GET this one.

I've had more dope and vagina than you ever will. Wink

Plus, I actually know some twentysomethings who were teens when it came out. True, many of the twentysomethings who watched it when it came out are thirtysomethings now.

Anecdotal "evidence". Why don't we move over to 'Friendly Talk on Religion"?

By the way, I'm vaginal, and that's a criticism? Vagina. Your post sounds anal. Anal. Ok, now we can disagree. Cool

P.S. I know lots of people who believe The Big Lebowski is a classic. In fact, if I didn't know better, I'd think you were one of several of The Usual Suspects who I know and believe that. Razzer

I'm 33, I haven't smoked pot in nearly a decade and I thought it was a great film - brilliant script and great lead performance. Very funny.

The bit with Donny's ashes is classic.

I'm 24, watched the movie for the first time when I was 15.
It's now one of my favorite movies.

It was only a couple months back that I saw The Big Lebowski for the first time. I kept meaning to see it but always forgot. Then when a Big Lebowski conevention showed up in Louisville, I figured it's time to check the flick out. Glad I did & it's on my list of dvds to purchase.

So what was the purpose of the Stranger (Sam Elliot)? Is he to this film what the Cowboy was to Mulholland Drive?

This literally just happened to me! I showed 2 of my closest friends this movie after being showed it myself by a family friend. I did not get it at first and i still don't, fully but I appreciated it and I thought it was really funny and a classic. So when it was over they were like "yeah i didn't really like it". I was so shocked that i got this weird feeling in my stomach, and i still have it. So my gut instinct was to ask them to name a better comedy and can you guess what they said. Talladega nights! This is how clueless they are. Then later when i recommended something to do they didn't believe me because i liked the big lebowski! I looked at them and said "wow i could name tons of people who just diehard love this movie and in fact they were the first people i met who didn't like it. It's funny though because it reminds me of the meaning (how i interpreted) of the movie which is that life doesn't make sense anymore...

Big Lebowski is definitely one of the greatest cult classics ever. Its pointless, hilarious, and epic.

I found this movie to be okay, but not great. It just didn't strike it with me too much.
