The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau
--------------- My basic objection to religion is not that it isn't true; I like plenty of things that aren't true. It's that religion grants its adherents malign, intoxicating and morally corrosive sensations. -Philip Pullman

The City and the Stars - Arthur C. Clarke
Oh, could I feel as I have felt, or be what I have been, Or weep as I could once have wept, o'er many a vanished scene; As springs in deserts found seem sweet, all brackish though they be, So, midst the withered waste of life, those tears would flow to me.

City of Spades- Colin McInnes If you haven't read his trilogy, along with Absolute Beginners and Mr Love and Mr Justice, then I highly recommend them. London just before the "swinging sixties," at the birth of teen culture, when the music was all about jazz. Great reads, the lot of them.
