I'm having trouble thinking of a book I started about 5 years ago and then lost. If I remember correctly it's about either an American or an Irishman in Dublin. He just finished school, is around 25 and has a girlfriend. He drinks, womanizes, etc. I'm sure there are several Irish books like this so I know this may be a tough one to locate.

The one thing I do remember is on the cover, they show someone with bright orange hair, almost like Conan O'Brien. Sorry that's all I know, does anyone know this book?

Ok, I think this thread should be turned into best anglo-Irish literature. We're bound to stumble on it.

I'll vote for "The Barrytown Trilogy," by Roddy Doyle, closely followed by his "Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha." All tremendous slices of life in working class Limerick in the mid to late 20th century. All laugh-out-loud funny. Most people are familiar with the film version of "The Commitments." A decent enough film, but it fails entirely to do justice to the book.

As for the book in question, I can't think of anything that might fit the description other than "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man," in some kind of horribly packaged paperback.

And ennyone who disagrees with me is a fookin c**t.

As for the book I'm almost positive now that it's an American living in Dublin, and I'm pretty sure it is sometime just after the end of WW2.

It is not Doyle, McCourt, or one of the more recent authors. I would guess it was written in the 50's (possibly late 40's). Does this jog anyone's memory?

Considering the glowing review I gave Roddy Doyle, and my apparent familiarity with, and affection for, anglo-Irish lit, what could possibly make you think that I'd insult the Roisin Dubh, or her lovely inhabitants?

I was given it by a friend several years ago, since he knows I'm of Irish heritage, and I enjoy all things Irish, but I started it and then lost the book and kind of forgot about it. How is it, is it worth picking up again?

I've never heard of that book, but I'll have to check it out. Anything that was banned for obscenity must be good!

3. I remember that redheads are often nicknamed
