I have placed the book on the table.

It didn't help me a whit, whilst trying to explain Australian Football. Smiler

Oh, could I feel as I have felt, or be what I have been,
Or weep as I could once have wept, o'er many a vanished scene;
As springs in deserts found seem sweet, all brackish though they be,
So, midst the withered waste of life, those tears would flow to me.

So you're not reading it yet?
I just finished Hocus Pocus by Vonnegut. Much lighter reading than War & Peace.

I finished the Yiddish Policemens Union by Michael Chabon. It was OK. I loved the premise and the set up, but I thought it fizzled a bit toward the end. I couldn't wait until it was done, after a while, and he left a few too many loose ends for my taste. A solid, entertaining enough read. An interesting twist on genre fiction, but not a classic.

About to start "Heyday." AVClub loved it. High middling on MC. We'll see, and I'll report back.

My basic objection to religion is not that it isn't true; I like plenty of things that aren't true. It's that religion grants its adherents malign, intoxicating and morally corrosive sensations. -Philip Pullman

Hmm...I'll still check it out due to the positive points you brought up.

I haven't started anything in a couple weeks. I have a few I'm interested in, but I'm not sure. Has anyone read Seeing by Jose Saramago? I loved Blindness, and Saramago in general, but I thought I'd bounce it off you all.

Just started John Keel's "Operation Trojan Horse," and I'm enjoying it.

The Adventures of Pinocchio also has a very allegorical nature which makes it enjoyable for adults, too.

I have just had a wonderful time reading Henry James's "In the Cage" in one sitting. I won't be surprised if no one's heard of it, but I thought it was spectacular and I strongly recommend reading it.

It irritates me when I finish reading a book I love. Books seem to end too suddenly...

That's a great story, and definitely one you can get sucked into forcing you to read the whole thing!

Read Finnegan's Wake. The first sentence completes the last sentence of the book. You can just keep reading it over and over!

I just finished Yiddish Policemen's Union. It was good, but I stopped caring about the characters and felt it left too many things loose..."Yiddish Policemen's Union 2: Return of the Yiddish Policemen" anyone?

I hate it when authors do that. I haven't read that book, but sometimes a writer will leave things unfinished just to keep the possibility of a sequel open.

Sequels are (EDIT: almost) always disappointing, both for the reader and the writer...so why bother?
