My favorite kids book of all time has to be Astrid Lingren's "The Brothers Lionheart". Can appeal to both children and adults. Teaches family values of brotherhood, and trust. Gets a little weird at the end, especially concerning death, but still an awesome read.

My favorite book as a child was Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped, and my favorite one to read to children is Where the Wild Things Are.
