I saw Capote this weekend. Absolutely outstanding! The audience was completely silent -- you could hear a pin drop for most of the movie.
I don't think there's anyone who has a chance against PSH for the Oscar -- his performance is stunning and the whole movie is beautifully done, he totally dominates the movie, and Hoffman is one of the most respected new actors in Hollywood who has been consistently great in everything he has been in, so his credibilioty points are at a maximum. None of the other contenders (e.g. the upcoming Joaquin Phoenix in Walk the Line, Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain) have this many pluses on their side. The only negative is that last year they gave it to another actor for another recreation of a real life person -- Jamie Foxx as Ray Charles. But I don't see how they can deny Hoffman the win.
William Hurt had a great time in A History of Violence -- it was so much fun to see him chewing on that role. But he was only in the movie for about five minutes or so -- there's no way he will even be nominated! Ed Harris was great too and had a more substantial role.
