I do not have time at present to consider all the movies I thought were great in 05. However, I liked "The Constant Gardener", loved King Kong, was intrigued by the "History of Violence," and laughed until my sides hurt over "40 yr. Old Virgin." Living in a small town I am still waiting for "Brokeback Mountain" which at last will be shown next week, and I am also waiting on Munich, Syriana and "Good Night and Good Luck."

With all that being said, I think "Capote" is the best film in terms of acting that I've seen in 05. Hoffman is the incarnation of Capote. He captures the tortured genius of this great writer in way that shocked me. When I read he was playing the role I was suprised. I watched Capote as a child and teen in interviews, and saw his ground-breaking work "In Cold Blood" on film at least five times. I also read the novel. From past roles alone I never would have cast Hoffman in this role. I would have judged it too much of a stretch. However, this actor has more flexibility and depth than I thought possible. I felt as though I was watching the Capote of my memories. I expressed my opinion of the movie in the "vote"section. I will not repeat that. I will say, this was one great performance by a man that deserves to be recognized as one great actor.

Boy, you got to carry that weight a long time!

Philip Seymour Hoffman IS Capote, and that's why HE will win next month. He captures every Johnny Carson nuance AND every Murder By Death EXTREME perfectly. He IS the MAN, pure and simple. YOU, I and tabuno WILL swear to it!!, along with others who were here! Hoffman really needs to win the Award to legitimize this year's Oscars. Cool

ok, you're obviously into indie films; nice to see someone who liked history of violence; my question, though, is what's the deal with everyone's ardent hatred of crash? it might have made some racial generalizations and of course there are people out there who are gonna be offended, but it's only a fictional story, not a representation of all the races portarayed. The way I see it, it took common stereotypes and dug deeper into why and how the stereotypes originated, revealing a hidden side of people that isn't usually seen. It had good acting for the most part and I think they did a good job intertwining the stories. plus, it's kind of nominated for best picture, so that's gotta count for something.

This pretty much sums it up.

From Slant Magazine's Oscar Predictions (Best Picture Category), just posted today:

"If you've been following these Oscar blurbs from the beginning, you've no doubt come to the realization that we've purposefully slipped a jab against Crash into each category, no matter how far we've had to bend over backwards to do so. If you've made it this far without taking notice, then you're undoubtedly a member of that exact same, incredibly desensitized, woefully oblivious demographic to whom Paul Haggis aimed his bullhorn screed, written and directed like a New Age episode of Jerry Springer....... This race boils down to Brokeback vs. Crash, in which harmless mediocrity will almost surely defeat pure evil."

My sentiments exactly.

Also, the Best Pic nomination means nothing. The Academy rarely gets it right.....

This is my first post in this section of the METACRITIC forums. I just saw an outstanding 2005 film called "Nine Lives." It is a series of 10 vinettes that -- using a single, unbroken camera shot for each vinette -- examine a crucial time in the life of 10 different women. Most of the segments are very good, e.g., numbers 1 -- 2. But the last segment, "Maggie," starring Glen Close, is a knockout. I was blindsided by how it ended, and left deeply saddened and moved.

Has anyone seen it? If so, what did you think?

The best movie I saw last year was Hostel! I still haven't seen Capote yet, and my expectations are high for that one, but shockingly the best film I saw from last year was a horror flick! Whoda thunk it?

I know it played the Toronto Film Festival in November, but Hostel came out in the U.S. the first weekend of 2006.

I haven't seen as many of last year's films as I want to, but my favorites are:

A History of Violence
Munich
Syriana
Good Night and Good Luck
Corpse Bride
Howl's Moving Castle
Walk the Line
Capote
Brokeback Mountain
The Squid and the Whale
That's in no particular order, but whatever.

"Syriana" and "Good Night And Good Luck" were, for me, far better than the rest of 2005's films. Crash was also good.

George Clooney is on a roll, isn't he?

Hey This is my first post. Long time reader, but decided to join the community today.

From 2005 I loved a lot of films, but also wasn't pleased with a lot of "5 star" films which I have seen reviewed. Most notable king kong did nothing for me. However I did really enjoy the acting by jack black and I wouldn't be suprised if he got a leading role in a good movie in the next year or two. Wedding crashers, I can't stand Vince Vaughn, I think he is crap and an asshole. Brokeback mountain, talk about boring, I love dramas, I really do, but I was never convinced by the story.

Its hard to pick a top ten, but here goes.

1. crash (that film just spoke to me, many people say its nothing compared to boys in the hood, but they underestimate it.)
2.sin city (it made me start reading the comics, plus I thought Rourke was a legend in that film.)
3. Downfall (A big war fan, this fit right into my college project of hitler in the 1900's.)
4. In my farthers den (When I saw this I didn't know what I was watching at first, but its very good acting and lovely scenery.)
5. You me and everyone we know (Just hilarious!)
6. Munich (Great film, and some great quotes, "Do you know why we are here?")
7. Star wars 3 (After a few watches it grows on you, but some die hard fans might be terrible dissapointed, like my dad.)
8.V FOR VENDETTA (I am not a comic book fan but for a movie this was great. Many people who have read the comics think this is rubbish, "Its nothing like the story wah wah".)
9. Grizzly Man (Nice scenery and great landscape.)
10. Hitch (I do not know what to put here so i chose this film. I found this quite funny, which is quite a suprise.)

As to Capote, excellent.
As to Squid and the Whale... What great performances utterlty wated on a self-indulgent, painfully obvious point. People need to stop feeling compelled to like movies that poke them in the eye to tell them what they already know.

While I'm at it...
King Kong was victimless fluff, nothing more.
Good Night and Good Luck was unobjectionalble, but left mke a little disappointed
Brokeback... spare me
And if anyone can possibly justify Squid and the Whale, let me know.

I really enjoyed "The Squid in the Whale". For me, it was an extremely well written and fabulously acted film. No, it probably didn't cover any new ground in terms of it's subject matter, but I hardly see how that makes it any less powerful.

I didn't like the squid and the whale, because I found the father character to be arragant and his son to be stupid in the way he always copies him etc. I know this is all purposeful, but I was in the cinema thinking please don't do this to me. Don't ruin some great characters. You may disagree but thats what I felt.

Similarily, the characters in lemming were brilliant, funny charming and great to just watch do nothing. Then hte director did a david lynch on us and totally destroyed the characters. I felt really angry that the director made me fall in love with the characters and then tear them apart by doing this.

Maybe its becuse my feelings on marriage are more strong than others, but if you watch it you know what that comment means.

I haven't seen all of the movies you've mentioned, but of the ones I have seen (1, 2, 6, 8, 10) and your comments regarding the ones you didn't like are quite reasonable. As for Star Wars 3, I was pretty burned out by the time it came out and from a sci fi purist standpoint, the more hard edge stuff is my preference.
