Since it is clearly to early in the year to start stating what is the best, what do you think will be the best? what are you looking forward to? This appears to be a pretty good year for movies with a couple blockbusters coming out. Here are a couple I think will make top class:

"Robots"
"Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"
"Star Wars episode three: Revenge of the Sith"
"Batman Begins"
"War of the Worlds" (This is going to be great!)
"Charlie and the Chocolate factory"
"Doom" (Guilty Pleasure, I hope it is good)

I would also add "King Kong", which I think has the best chance of not sucking.

I have a feeling that Robots will disappoint. I'm sure the animation will be incredible, but the characters and storyline don't sound very inspired. I also think the Fender character sounds like a blatant rip-off of Bender from Futurama.

I tried to post from a strange computer at work today, but it wouldn't let me, so I wholeheartedly second King Kong. I think that'll tear the roof off the theatres, at least...I hope. I didn't see the commercial during the Super Bowl of War of the Worlds, but that should have potential.

Thankyou for mentioning "King Kong" I can't believe that I forgot about it. I saw "Robots" earlier today and I enjoyed it very much, nothing like watching robots do the robot. Robin Williams is still one of the funniest people in "Show Business." I would probably rate it around 80/100

You should add "Kingdom of Heaven" to your list, or at least I would. I'm looking forward to it more than anything else, but that's just me.

You're right, krafty. The Crusades, as directed by Ridley Scott, could be a major film. I'd like to add The New World. Terrence Malick doesn't make many films but he is a true artist. His last film, The Thin Red Line, did get a Best Picture nomination, but my fave of his is the mind-meltingly gorgeous (visually and aurally) Days of Heaven.

I saw the commercial for War of the Worlds during the SuperBowl and it looked freekin amazing!!

I don't get what was so good about the superbowl commercial. It looked like an outtake from Independence Day minus the special effects. I'm not saying the movie isn't going to be awesome, just that the commercial didn't get me that excited.

I'm hoping Land of the Dead is really good. George Romero basically invented the modern zombie movie. It is tentativly opening up Holloween 2005.

Thanks for the input, I can't believe I forgot Rob Zombies new movie. Nothing like a good dark comedy to make me feel scared and amused at the same time.

I'm still on Spring Break, but my wife has to work and my daughter doesn't return from D.C. until the evening, so I guess I'll be going to Sin City tomorrow. Report back soon.

Both "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" and new "Star Wars" film come out this week. I am incredibly excited but think I will see "Hitchiker's Guide..." first.

EDIT: "Revenge of the Sith" doesn't come out this week, I only thought that it did because a local theater already has it on presale.

Best movies for Oscar consideration so far are:
1. Crash
2. Sin City


Two early contenders and that is it. Very disappointed in HitchHikers. To see some Star Wars movie this week....something about Varth Dader...

...bah, "Crash" shouldn't get any oscar consideration. It's just not good enough. Only half-interesting character was Matt Dillon's cop. The rest was just really predictable, often-times contrived and unbelievable, crap.

Dominar_Rygel has a good listing of possible Best of the Year hopefuls. This is my second post, I it appears the consensus on this thread is popular, fantasy/sci-fi movies. Having been pretty on with "Kingdom of Heaven" prediction on another website, I'm a little doubtful about some of the selections proposed on this thread. "Crash" is likely to be nominated for some of the prestigous awards.

"Crash"--forget it! Maybe no films so far will get nominations. I'm more of an Oscar whore than anybody I know, but you don't really think the nominees/winners are the worthiest of the choices, right?

If you look at this sites own metacritic rating and the using rating of "Crash" it's quite favorable. I would hazard a guess that "Crash" has an even shot at an Oscar nomination but a pretty sure shot at a Golden Globe nomination.

Sometimes the major awards hit on quality and worthy movies, sometimes it's political, sometimes is for overlooked or passed over awards from past years. The Oscar has been considered more of a political, inside, popularity contest with some critical judgment but the bellweather awards seem to be more towards the Golden Globes nowadays and other regional awards like the NY Film Critic Awards and others.

Now that we are further into the year, maybe this thread will see more action. One film I think will see some critical acclaim is Brokeback Mountain.
