Any other lovers of Latin soul here?

I have several Latin soul/funk comps, including Barrio Nuevo, Sensacional Soul, Nu Yorica Roots and the NuYorican Funk Experience series. The only artist's albums I've explored so far have been by the more Latin rock/pop based groups such as El Chicano and Malo. I'm interested in exploring records from Joe Bataan, the Fania All-Stars (I have a dvd from them on order), Eddie Palmieri, Willie Bobo and Joe Cuba. I'd like to discover albums from female Latin soul/funk artists that on par with Bataan or Palmieri. Plus I haven't done heard much in the Latin-Afro/Cuban sound (of soul/funk/jazz anything!) though it definately interests me.

Crazed, I'm not a big fan but here are a couple of compilations you might not be aware of:

"Hey Everybody...I Gotta New Dance" and "Gettin' Soulful", both on Vampisoul.

Label's got a website: www.vampisoul.com.
You might also want to check out Pucho and His Latin Soul Brothers for a Latin Jazz fix. I reckon they're great.

Hi Pulque, I do have the "Hey Everybody...I Gotta New Dance" comp, which is great- highly recommended. It has almost 25 songs and is very nicely priced at Dusty Groove (I love to plug that site). "Gettin' Soulful" is one that's new to me, I'll have to explore that. Vampisoul, oh yes, that is one excellent label. If anyone here wants to get a magnificent earload of great Latin soul/funk and even some funk-psych, buy a copy of Vampsoul's v/a comp "Sensacional Soul". Utterly fantastic! There's some Joe Bataan releases on Vampi that look interesting and an anthology on Salsoul that is out of stock most everywhere I check. Hmmm that Pucho and His Latin Soul Brothers looks interesting as well.
Cool!

Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers can venture into cheese a bit for my liking. Ok though.

I also got one of the NuYorican Funk Experience compilations and it was fantastic. Eddie Palmieri's VP Blues is one of my absolute favourite tracks of all time.

Since then I've got into a bit of Ray Barretto (Hard Hands is ace, Acid almost as good, La Cuna is jazzier and not so great apart from a wonderful version of Stevie Wonder's Pastime Paradise). Willie Colon's Cosa Nuestra is to be recommended also.

Thanks for these recommendations, I've only heard Barretto and Colon on some v/a comps but definately like what I've heard. Seems to be a lot of '60s/'70s Latin soul/funk just getting around to being released on cd. I haven't heard much from modern bands trying to revive this sound, except for a few tracks on albums that are otherwise instrumental funk. Maybe the cd reissues will prompt more notice of such artists.

Tru, you've probably heard more than I have, but his stuff from the late-1960s/early-1970s (the only stuff of his I've heard) is pretty damn good.

Crazed, I'd recommend:

Legends of Acid Jazz, The Best of Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers (both different compilations of late-60s/1970 stuff) and Super Freak (1972).

I heard some samples of Pucho & His Latin Soul Brothers the other night and liked it. I can't recall what album they were from but they were very nice. I traced down a Pucho album and one from Ray Barretto online, so those will be on my next order. I'm excited about finally hearing a full length album from a Latin soul artist for a change.

However, I'm not through with the comps, as I found & heard samples from a v/a comp, Son Cubano NYC: Cuban Roots New York Spices 1972-1982 which I found dirt cheap on amazon marketplace.
