Right now, my favorite song is "Another Again" by John Legend. Very haunting piano riffs.

Me too! I was all ready to post it before I got to reading mark's post, but then I had this little mental one person dialogue:

a: Tracks of My Tears, yeah what an awesome song.
b: But wait, that's Motown, not soul. dammit
a: um.....

I'm having problems coming up with the names of my other two picks. Which means that Smokey should win.

I love "What's Going On" and every song on What's Going On. I feel it is a long mournful prayer in the same way John Coltrane's A Love Supreme is.

However, my favorite soul song lately has been "I Want to Be Ready" by a Columbus, Ohio group called the Kool Blues. It is amazingly good. It's from a compilation by the Numero Group of lost soul sides from obscure independent labels. I can't recommend it (or any of the releases from the Numero Group) enough.

That gem of a song is from Eccentric Soul: The Capsoul Label, probably my favorite of the Numero Label soul comps. I don't know how they keep unearthing all these brilliant, lost soul and funk songs but more power to them for not only doing it but doing it right (excellent sound and extensive notes).

I just bought the latest one from Numero featuring the Prix label, also from Columbus. I have listened to it a few times and recommend it as well.

Being from Columbus but born well after this music was made, I had never heard of these labels (Capsoul and Prix) before these comps. I wonder how many other amazing songs or artists on tiny labels around the country were lost or forgotten.
