"Picnic at Hanging Rock" and "Walkabout" - Both are coming of age stories dealing with repression. Neither really put you on the edge of your seat. Instead they just slowly find places to stick in your mind.
I find "Picnic at Hanging Rock" one of the perfect movies to recommend. Besides the repression aspect, there's the mystery of the story, the fantasy element(s), how it translated from the novel and the belief that it was based on a true event, though it wasn't (from what I've read). Back to topic- I loved "No Such Thing", Hal Hartley's twisted tale of myth & media staring Sarah Polley, Robert Burke, Helen Mirren and Julie Christie. This film recieved some pretty terrible reviews. I can understand that, it's not easy to like though I re-watch it often. To it's defense, some reviews basically didn't like that it wasn't Beauty-And-Beast romantic or they didn't like the attacks on the media. I don't care, I love it for just those very reasons.
