Hmm... I'm not sure. I love the opening credits (as well as the following scene) from All the Real Girls, particularly because I find the Will Oldham song to be so incredible. As for closing credits, I really liked Dogville's.... not exactly pleasant, just very, very effective.

Mark F: I, too, stay for ALL the credits; a movie isn't really over until the credits are finished, in my opinion. We usually close down the theater or at least see a lot of sweeping and garbage retrieval. I recently regretted staying until the end for the very first time. While Dodgeball (it was the Father's Day choice of the two honored fathers present) was pretty funny in the 10-year-old poop-joke school of humor (which can be OK at times), the after-credits Ben Stiller in a Fat-Bastard-esque scene left me with a much queasier feeling than I would have liked.
Eccentro -- the end of School of Rock was pretty cute. They were singing about the people leaving the movie during the credits. (Yeah, po-mo self-reference is old-hat, but it was still cute.)
(restraining myself from going on about Quadrophenia, the Who, etc.)
Opening credits that I really enjoyed...because the entire film was such a COMPLETE AND THOROUGH take on 1962 boy-meets-girl/problems ensue/happy ending with virtue intact films.... "Down with Love." Also, I'm not sure if it was the opening credit or not, but it's sure burned into my brain as the opening shot -- Alex's eye and the music and the narration at the very beginning of "A Clockwork Orange." I still get goosebumps remembering it, although the film looks very dated now. (speaking of important movies at important times in one's past....)

It wasn't the opening credits because Kubrick did a rainbow thing flashing different colors at the end and beginning of the film. Try to watch it again soon, since compared to most "contemporary" films, it's visionary.

Did anyone watch the end credits of Terry Zwigoff's "Ghost World" and see that hilarious bit with Steve Buscemi fighting it out behind the sofa? This is the kind of thing I'm talking about that you may be missing if you walk out too soon or turn your DVD off too soon. That was totally classic.

I'm gonna have to go with To Kill a Mockingbird on this one. It is just stunning photography. It also inspired Cameron Crowe's opening credits on Almost Famous. A couple of other greats would be Catch Me If You Can, It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World and Pulp Fiction.
David Fincher has always had great Opening credits as well. Seven, Fight Club, and Panic Room are all great.
ps Amelie is great too!

Gonna have to second Jakal on David Fincher. He has always put his personal touch on every aspect of his films from beginning to end. And Amelie is a fantastic film! I love you Jakal!

Yea, well you see this one? This was my dream, my wish....and it didn't come true. So I'm taking it back, I'm taking them all back. -Face
LT, How could YOU or I forget the end credits of "West Side Story"? They were totally original, and almost incomparable to anything which came before, or since, for that matter.
P.S. The opening credits of "i know where i'm going!" are pretty much mind-blowing and also incomparable to everything before. However, I will say that I totally enjoyed the opening and end credits of "The Lady Eve" (1941)- Henry Fonda, Barbara Stanwyck and Charles Coburn; Preston Sturges is close to God, at least Mine.

I'm going to second V and third E by praising the closing credits to "Kill Bill, Vol. 2." They begin with a presentation of all the actors in both parts of the movie, all pictorially shown in color, with code names where appropriate. When the cast credits finish to the four-hour epic, the credits turn into something which looks like credits for a black-and-white film noir from the 40s, which are also excellent. Hey, V and E, I hope you stayed to the very end where Kiddo plucked the eye out...and then wanted to do it again.
Also, did anyone notice the opening credits? Kiddo says I'm going to "Kill Bill", and then it cuts to the titles, which say only "Vol. 2." Very original, but it does remind me of the credits to Francois Truffaut's "Fahrenheit 451", which were entirely spoken. There were no words on the screen anywhere during the credits. Of course, that, in turn, reminds me of the end credits of "Citizen Kane." Orson Welles narrates who everyone was, as you see them from outtakes. Then, the credits list some technical accomplishments during Bernard Herrmann's wonderful music. That reminds me of the wonderful credits with Herrmann's score in "The Devil and Daniel Webster"......shut up, mark.

I just watched "Being John Malkovich" again, so I want to mention the end credits. After the poetic-justice ending, Carter Burwell's haunting theme plays over slow-motion images of Emily swimming and when it goes to black with the remainder of the credits, Bjork's gorgeous "Amphibian" plays straight through to the end. I'll admit I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a coda, but not that much.

The closing credits to "The Incredibles" stand out as the best of the year. They don't throw in any hidden endings, but the graphics are great, and you get to hear more of the cool James Bondish musical score. They're well-worth staying for.

A couple of more modern films that I've enjoyed the credits to quite a bit are City Slickers and Catch Me If You Can. The animations are amusing and they also fit the action and story of the films.
