None of these movies really made me second guess myself, lose sleep, or make me feel like a bad person, but they definitely messed with my mind.

Naked Lunch - Ok, this one may have made me lose a little sleep.
Jacob's Ladder
Ghost in the Shell
Brazil
Memento
Pi

No my friend, it makes you human...as long as you were lusting for her on her 18th birthday!

That's cool, she was over 18 at the time of the lusting. Smiler

Last Holiday (1950, Henry Cass)

This movie blew my mind at a very young age, and I'm glad it did! It immediately catapulted Alec Guinness into the ranks of my second fave actor after Bogie. Cool

No doubt about it kids... here's movies that are the textbook definition of "mind-fuck"

Videodrome (Cronenberg)
--After seeing this movie I stood up and screamed out "What did I just watch?!"

Eraserhead (Lynch)
--Yikes

Adaptation (Jonze)
--Shit, this movie practically does a dance on your gray matter while you're trying to figure it out.

Last and not least

Persona (Bergman)
--This movie messed with me on a very fundamental level way moreso than the aforementioned movies, it's pretty chilling and if you wanna question your existence at 3 in the morning before you have to finish a final paper worth 30 percent of your grade, I recommend it.

American Psycho disturbed me more than any movie over the last decade. I am disturbed by movies that show how close we are to madness. As a person that works day in and out with people in the "corporate world", I realize how many embrace the dysfunctional perfectionsim and vicious competitiveness that drove "Patrick Bateman" over the edge. Granted, I know most, if not all, will never engage in physical violence; however, I see enough emotional violence (raging tempers, paranoia over promotions, attempts to sabatoge the success of others, and the "win at all costs" mentality ) to frighten me. We see glimpses of the Patrick Batemans in "The Apprentice" (the artificially contrived reality??? show). The line between healthy ambition and coldhearted narcissism is a fine one.

Boy, you got to carry that weight a long time!

I haven't figured out how to quote someone else yet, but I wanted to thank you, PRG for putting the movie "Ghost in the Shell" on your list. I just watched it tonight. I thought it was a pretty incredible movie. It had a lot of Biblical ideas in it, which are always thought provoking.

If you or anyone know of some other movies in that same vain please let me know.

Thanks

I must say I do love movies that require some actual brain activity. Here's a short list

1/ Donnie Darko
(we all have our theories and answers about it...they're all pants)
2/ Vanilla Sky
(Love that movie, what a whirlwind of emotions and mind-bending storytelling)
3/ Planet of the Apes (2001)
(big Tim Burton fan but...did that movie actually make any sense?!?!?)
4/ Ghost in the Shell (1/2)
(I'm still not quite sure what it was all about but damn! Those films looked good!)
5/ I Heart Huckabees
(Love that movie, it requires your undivided attention)
6/ Total Recall
(yes, the one with Arnie. Was it all in his mind, is he lobotomised or what?)
7/ Adaptation
(Charlie Kaufman at his best)
8/ American Psycho
(It's the ending that got me. Such a good film)
9/ Blue Velvet
(David Lynch can get my left eyebrow to lift so many times in a single movie)

*Lost Highway
*Videodrome
*Eraserhead
*Wild at Heart
*American Psycho (and I still haven't seen the hole thing)
*Apocalypse Now
*Dancer in the Dark
*The Grandmother (a David Lynch short film)
*Happiness

Has anyone seen Three... Extremes! I haven't, but I have a feeling when I do it will wind up on this list.

I haven't seen it, but I've heard of it. I think Bai Ling is in it, and yes, I agree it will probably end up on the list.

I thought I had some good choices here but it seems you've all beaten me to it.

Whoever said these - you must be pretty open minded to have sat all the way through them. I found them very disturbing -

Faces of Death
Cannibal Holocaust
Eraserhead

Other films that deserve a mention -

Man bites dog
Braindead (Dead ALive in the US)
Meet the Feebles
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Tobe Hooper)
