I was looking at the topics and noticed that there was one important topic missing. What are your top 10 movies of all time? I usually ask this (or top 5) when I am getting to know someone. Here's mine.

Jaws
Heat
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Donnie Darko
Mr. Smith GoesTo Washington
Miller's Crossing
Manhattan
Rushmore
The Graduate
The Hustler

Well, I didn't start this, but I'll certainly add to it. This list only leaves off 200-300 films which I believe all movie watchers SHOULD see, but Top Ten is 10. (wong, if you ever return, don't slam me too much.)

1.(tie!) "Elmer Gantry"(1960) and "Jaws"(1975)
3."Star Wars"(1977)
4."Midnight Cowboy"(1969)
5."Raiders of the Lost Ark"(1981)
6."Cabaret"(1972)
7."Little Big Man"(1970)
8."The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"(2003)
9."Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"(1984)
10."Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"(1966)

So much for any pretense that I care for "great art", but then again those are great art, maybe just not pretentious. Let's see...top ten? I think I can sneak at least 100 more on here at the end, especially some classics. There's...shut up, mark( that sounds like a good title.)

My top ten:
Citizen Kane
Casablanca
Godfather
Gone With The Wind...
JUST KIDDING! I HAD TO JAKAL!
Ok, the REAL top ten:
It's A wonderful Life
Glengarry Glen Ross
Rushmore
Heat
L.A. Confidential
Seven
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
The Green Mile
Tombstone
Harvey
As Jakal knows, this is always a hard one. Like Mark, there are a ton of films that could easily go on this list. There are a number of movies that I would need a separate list for, like favorite movies in a trilogy (which could be another thread). Star Wars, Indiana Jones, The Godfather, Back to the Future, Lord of the Rings. I wish I could put all these on my top ten. Where do I put Airplane!...and Pi...and Rear Window...and 12 angry men...and Lawrence of Arabia...and...NEED...MORE...LISTS...

Yea, well you see this one? This was my dream, my wish....and it didn't come true. So I'm taking it back, I'm taking them all back.

True, it would be nice to list that top 200 or 300, but it is hard for me to get that much time here at work. Maybe sometime though.

These would be my favorite 10 movies and would be the ones I would pick if I could only watch 10 movies the rest of my life. Although if that were the case, I might think about the list a little longer!

1.Conan the Barbarian
2.They Live
3.The Seventh Seal
4.2001:A Space Odyssey
5.Evil Dead 2
6.Lord of the Rings(gotta be the whole series)
7.Master Killer:the 36th Chamber
8.The Empire Strikes Back
9.Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail
10.Kill Bill 1 + 2

The last few were difficult in narrowing it down to 10. I am confident in my top 7 as my favorites. Strikingly similar to the list I put in Eccentro's time capsule flicks thread!

"If it were beneficial, their father would produce children already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become profitable in every respect." -Jesus, from the Gospel Of Thomas

Well, this was really difficult. Just my opinion here, but if you don't try to get a list of 10 or so, you're not actually playing the game, because the challenge includes having to cut out the ones it kills you not to include.
So, as of today, in no particular order except for my current #1, my Top Ten Favorite Great Films (as opposed to the guilty pleasure types) are:
1. Goodfellas
2. Citizen Kane
3. Seventh Seal
4. Dr. Strangelove
5. Do the Right Thing
6. Heavenly Creatures
7. Hudsuckser Proxy
8. Wings of Desire
9. Platoon
10. A Hard Day's Night

And the ones I have to mention because there should be 15 in a Top Ten List <g> are Grand Illusion, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, the original Star Wars, Carlito's Way, and Bonnie & Clyde.

Agree with Carol02, the previous poster...the idea is to get it down to 10, which, by definition is very difficult. Listing however many you want to list is the easy way out.

My first four a super-solid, the next two are pretty much always in there, and the next four are frequently interchangeable. But today, it's...

1. Annie Hall
2. A Clockwork Orange
3. City Lights (Charlie Chaplin classic)
4. Schindler's List
5. The Godfather
6. Chinatown
7. The Graduate
8. Return of the Secaucus 7 (John Sayles)
9. Pulp Fiction
10. Vertigo
