A really overrated movie was Eyes Wide Shut. It sucked and the acting sucked.

Agreed, this was a beautifully done film featuring horrible acting and a stale plot.

Just had to chime in and nominate "Akira" for the most overrated film I have ever watched. I don't know how many of you pop in anime occasionally and watch it, but seeing the reviews you would think it's a standout amongst some truley great animated movies (like Mononoke Himme). In fact it's nothing but your common confusing subpar flick.

Couldn't disagree more about Eyes Wide Shut.

A wonderfully constructed film, containing Cruise's best performance, and I say that as someone who dislikes Cruise a great deal as an actor.

Akira is a little overated sure...but it's still fun, and I never found it confusing. Smiler

Any of the SPIDER-MAN films come to mind.

"American Beauty"

I've never understood the heaps of praise this movie was given. Many people still think it's a great movie. I seem to remember it being lauded for introducing the "indie film" to the masses. Hmmm...if that's the case, then sure, I can give it some credit, but that doesn't make it an especially good movie. I'd give it 3-3.5 stars out of 5.

I'm not a big fan of Kevin Spacey when he's doing his glib, sarcastic thing, which probably has a lot to do with it. But there are several dysfunctional family/broken dreams movies out there as good or better.

Anything Michael Moore has done. Now, maybe its not overrated but definately a joke comming from him. I mean C'mon the guy protests large corporations but I'm pretty sure by how fat he is, he has eaten at his fair share of Mickey D's. He's also a big part of one of the largest and greediest corporations of all time, it's called "rich actors and film makers". This guys getting rich because of the country he bashes. The country is screwed up, yes, but if it were a more liberal leader in house would he still complain. Anyway, the stuff is good to know but C'mon Michael, your no saint.

I'm not sure how you compare the two. Filmmakers and actors aren't making huge profits by outsourcing jobs to Mexico and China, engaging in dodgy business practices, or treating their workers unfairly.

But yeah...Boondock Saints is far from overrated.

No no, even with the critical consensus as is, it's still overrated.

Come now, we're beyond critiques of physical appearance. People give this guy a lot of flack. You know, he advocated piracy of "Sicko" just so it would reach the masses more effectively.

Uh, Million Dollar Baby? Underdog fighter. Over the hill manager. She doesn't play by the rules. He's dead inside, so he won't let her in. Aww. She's got a crappy family. It's narrated by Morgan Freeman! That seals the deal! Oh, and the ending, blah. The whole film reeks of heart-string tugging, and not in the good way. One critic said it best when he called it every tired boxing cliche.

Also, Pan's Labyrinth! I actually wanted to love this one, forget about Million Dollar Baby. Every technical aspect of this movie was incredible - directing, cinematography, makeup, CGI, sound, music. Every aspect of it that was supposed to make it this emotional juxtaposition of a child's fantasy land and the horrors of war fell flat on its face. A mediocre war film and a mediocre series of WoW quests squished together ("first, retrieve the golden key. Then, put the magic stones in the frog's belly! Resplendent!") Parts of it made me physically embarrassed to be watching it, and worse that I drug friends of mine along to watch it too (the ending in particular. And "sing me a lullaby, please..." "I...I've forgotten the words" "Then hum it! Hum it with all your heart!" /hums theme music.) Contrived.
