the saddest movie i have ever seen would have to be the director's cut of the butterfly effect, which was 10x as sad as the theatrical version, and those of you who have seen this version know how different the endings are.

OK, so I just watched Eternal Sunshine for the second time and have to say it is definatly a sad movie. I believe that the "sadness" factor of a movie is destictly tied to ones current emotional state and how the plot of the movie relates to your own life and any event that are relative.
i.e. Eternal Sunshine - I have a beautiful wife and family, and though I nitpick at the inperfections of my life and even consider life without them when I am in a foul mode, in my heart I know I would be uterly devestated if I were to lose them through course of my own self destructive life choices.
Therefore, this movie speaks to me. Other movies that put me in a retrospective meloncholy funk.
A.I. - For anyone who has lost a parent. This is a tear jerker ending. Can you say regret. Amelie - This movie is poetry, you dont even have to speak french to see the beautiful sadness. Big Fish - For those who lost someone, only to find they were a truely unique soul. Field of Dreams - Refer back to A.I.
All time saddest! And if you have seen this, it is a miracle. Its a 2 minute claymation short called "Without You",its about a dog whose master has past away. And all around him are objects with memories attached to them. The song is so fitting, in just 2 minutes you are weeping like a little girl.
There is no greater sadness than losing a pet. For you leave them without ever being able to express how much joy they bring into your life. Unconditional love. None of the flaws that occupy a human exsistence.

Million Dollar Baby was so sad. That was the one movie that kept me depressed after a couple days of watching it. It was a great film and really moving. Everything just hit me really hard.

quote: Dale M. posted:
There was a film back in the 60's called Charly which was utterly sad. I think Cliff Robertson won an academy award for his role in it. The story on which it was based, Flowers for Algernon, was even sadder. Charly (1968) that provided the role of which Mr. Robertson recieved a best actor Oscar Award and had bought the film rights to the movie so he could be cast in it. The movie was also a stort short, then a novel written by Daniel Keyes as well as a stage play. It major theme of the plot has also been played out in Awakenings (1990). The personal story of hope and dispair, of love and love lost is a universal experience that most of us have been through and affects us on an intimate, intensively painfully emotional and hurtful level.

Saddest movies I've ever seen in order:
1. United 93 ~ Only time I actually ever had tears come down my face in a movie besides just swell up a little. I highly recommend this movie.
2. Gladiator ~ One of my all time favorite movies and definately one of the saddest I've ever seen, fictional or not.
3. Schindlers List ~ The holocaust obviously takes its toll on anyones emotions.
4. Crash ~ wasn't exactly sad but it had a deep impact on me, especially the scene where the car was flipped over.
From here on I would say Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Dances with Wolves, and many many more. But overall, I don't think their is any movie in my entire life that has emotionally torn me apart more thann United 93. Whether it has something to do with the fact that I lived through that time period or whether it reall is just one of the best made sad movies I've ever seen, I don't know. But that movie.... every day I pray to my god to never let anything like that ever happen again...

One movie that makes me tearing eyed is king kong. I always felt sorry for the big furry guy. he got screwed over by man. Even though I am not a big peter jackson fan (after what he did to LOTR), but I think he seen the story as a tragedy like I always felt it was.

ok, redavenger, I'll bite. What did he do to LOTR? I've heard plenty of people say that about Star Wars eps. 1-3, maybe Narnia or Harry Potter, but not so much about LOTR.

"Mystic River" - Tim Robbins does such an amazing job; watching his character be killed tears me up. "Adaptation" - The realization that these two brothers love and need each other is even more important when one dies. "Broken Flowers" - Bill Murray's character is so alone at the end of this film. "Crash" - When the viewer thinks that the daughter has been shot is one of the more emotional moments I've seen in film. "Life Is Beautiful" - I know, I know, but still. I also thought that "Sin City" had a sad ending.

I've got to go for Grave of the Fireflies aswell. for the most part the movie is dry and tranquil at the same time, going along at an even pace like a documentry. Then it suddenly hits you at the end, you realise it has all bilt up to that one point and it all comes together. Deffinately the saddest movie I have seen. \

I thnk that EVITA is pretty sad, and Braveheart similairly made me feel quite sad when Mel Gibson gets his insides cut out at teh end. And I am sure that that Tolkien quote is wrong. I think it's supposed to be 'Not all that WANDER are lost' not Wonder..

There have only ever been one movie that moved me to the brink of tears
Hotel Rwanda
and there has only actually been one film that made me shed a tear
Requiem for A Dream
the only other sad films i've seen that i can think of now are
The Pursuit of Happyness (That scene in the bathroom!) Crash (the scene with the Bird York song is some of the most intensely emotionally charged piece of film to date) Mystic River The Pianist Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (just the scene of Jim Carrey's breakdown scene in his car is more than deserving of an oscar, or several oscars.)
