I recently saw Hotel Rwanda and would definitely add it to my list of saddest movies.

Jacques Doillon's PONETTE

Darezhan Omirbaiev's ASSASSIN

João César Monteiro's last movie

Mizoguchi's magnificent MY SON (I think is the title)

Wenders' FALSE MOVEMENT

That's all I can think of right now without moving on to anguished or desperate but the list goes on...

I didn't cry or anything, but one of the saddest, most depressing films I've seen in a while is the Chinese film "Millenium Mambo." It originally came out in 2001, and won some major film festival awards. Shu Qi's breakthrough role, and she's also one of the most beautiful women in the world. If that last point will motivate any of you to see it.

Other depressing films that I can think of right now:

The Good Girl - yes, the one with Jennifer Aniston. If you don't believe me and haven't seen it, then go see it!

Dancer in the Dark - Won Best Picture at Cannes a few years ago. Had heard it was one of the most depressing films ever made. "They" were right about that.

Midnight Cowboy - As someone above also mentioned.

I know I'm missing a few...I'm still overwhelmed by "Millenium Mambo."

Splendor in the Grass and Lilith are two movies that really get to me.

Also Eastwood seems to have an effect on me when it comes to inducing tears.

The Bridges of Madison County
Unforgiven
A Perfect World
Million Dollar Baby

I've teared up at one point or another watching those four movies.

Sure, but in Rudy, weren't you crying tears of joy?

Just saw "The Hours" on T.V. Wow, what a great movie! But it certainly was depressing. Not just the whole suicide stuff, but just all of the sad, awkward moments in a lot of the character interactions. Amazing movie though, just sad...

I agree totally on the hours. It was very well done and the acting was absolutely superb by all the 3 main actresses.

Wowza, I cant believe no one mentioned "Requiem for a Dream" which is the most depressing, drawn out, depressing movie. It puts you in this terribly sad mind state, and yet still manages to make it worse by the end. Great flick.

I would definetly have to agree with Requiem for A Dream, and Dancer in the Dark. Bjork's performance in Dancer in the Dark was superb! Let's hope she makes more movies someday. I would also like to add Welcome to the Dollhouse. The abuse they did to that girl was too much, I think. I would also like to add this foreign film I have seen once called Abandoned. It's about this boy who is forced to live in this sort of foster home where he gets abused like crazy, he sees his friend die..it's just too muc h to handle and it left me depressed for days. I would also like to add Bambie, when the mother deer dies. Traumatic stuff for a child!

Whilst not a sad movie, when Jack goes for the throat of Nurse Ratchet......I realise what it will cost him, and immediately turn to water. It also has alot to do with nicholsons AMAZING performace.

Oh, when John Merrick puts his head down on his pillow at the end of what for him was a perfect day THAT absolutely kills me everytime.
David Lynch is an absolute master at conveying tender heartbreak-so underrated in that regard. AND the funeral of Barry Lyndon's SON! arrrghhh.
