Since, this same topic (regarding music) is wonderfully informative and fun to read I am starting one here, in the film board. For those who havent checked out the "Thoughts on SOngs" thread I will be happy to re-explain the rules.
I will begin by naming two different films or people in film (a director, a cinematographer, an actor etc.). Whomever replies first will comment on one of the two films/people. If this seems confusing, its not. Check out the "Thoughts on Songs" thread to see this kind of thing in action.
I've loved both Zwigoff's "Crumb" and "Ghost World." I guess if I were to talk about him as a craftsman, I would say that he's an accomodater. Now that has nothing to do with being with an appeaser.
My favorite parts of his films (Zwigoff's) are the fact that the Crumb family actually let him get so close, and the fact that Thora Birch and Scarlett Johannsen are so beautiful AND honest....plus the fact that the closing credits with Buscemi in "Ghost World" are so hilarious.

Ah Mark two additional films to talk about----honest mistake.

Eccentro: Ah Mark two additional films to talk about----honest mistake.
OK, I can see that what I did might be confusing to people. If anyone wants to go next, say something about "Crumb" or "Ghost World", or if you prefer, discuss "Triplets of Belleville."
When you are finished, list two more films for the next person to discuss.

I loved the Triplets Of Belleville. The first movie in years that made me laugh without dialogue. The scene of crossing the ocean is incredible, and then coming to the giant city full of visual references to the excesses of capitalism, ah, wonderful! The characters were perfectly animated, surreal, yet still familiar. The music of course was great too. Can't wait to see what this director does next!
Irreversible or Man Bites Dog
"If it were beneficial, their father would produce children already circumcised from their mother. Rather, the true circumcision in spirit has become profitable in every respect." -Jesus, from the Gospel Of Thomas
Well, S, I was going to let somebody else comment, but since no one has, I'll talk about the NC-17 "Man Bites Dog." If someone was to stumble across this film on TV, they just might think that they were watching a snuff movie. It is presented believably-enough as a black-and-white documentary about a serial killer followed around by a reporter and a cameraman. The "documentarians" capture several of his murders in "in-your-face" detail, as well as his domestic life. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but the principal characters are played by the three directors, and needless to say, things don't turn out as you might expect. I'm of the opinion that this film is a social satire, but you could just as easily not see any "humor" or point to it, so it's left to the individual to decide.
How about continuing with a dark theme:
Fargo or In Cold Blood
