I want to brush up on my film theory and history. Can anyone recommend a good, broad text?

Do you want something that will various syles, etc., more of a film history book, or are you interested in the filmmaking process, and you're interested in learning about what goes into making a good film, etc.?

If the latter, one of my favorite reads on the subject of filmmmaking is David Mamet's On Directing Film. It's based on a series of guest lectures he gave at Columbia University. It's probably my favorite book I've read on the subject.
