I guess while I'm here I must say that "The Matrix" and "The Usual Suspects" are two of my all-time favortie movies. I didn't like "The butterfly effect" much, but the idea was promising. I'm not sure if "Identity" falls into this category but that wasn't a bad movie.

I've still not seen either of the two Matrix sequels, but I have them DV-R'ed to watch at a later date. Given that there's a new cottage industry in philosophy dealing with the Matrix trilogy (four books and counting!), I s'pose I ought to watch them...

Really? I have to confess I'd written Identity off on the basis of bad trailers. I like the cast a great deal, though, so give your endorsements, I think I'm going to have to reconsider.

I had low expectations, but I was genuinely surprised by the ending and by the various plot twists. Unlike some other shocking twists (like The Others and The Sixth Sense), I wasn't expecting what I got.

It's worth checking out. It's on my cable (Cinemax, I think) all the time.

Yes, everyone should watch and/or re-watch "Jacob's Ladder" and "Identity". I figured Alain Resnais and Nicolas Roeg were the "masters of (non-)reality", so you can watch them, but except for Resnais' "Night and Fog" and Roeg's "The Witches", most of their films are incomprehensible!

You really need to check them out. I am one of those people who was a Matrix fan from beginning to end. If you are ever in the mood for sheer action just throw in "Reloaded" and enjoy the ride.

I went to watch this one because it was reccomended to me all over the place but as soon as I found out it was another one of those schizophrenic movies I didnt bother with it. To me that ending is becoming the most overused in Hollywood to the point of nuisance. The two types of movies (The Usual Suspects vs. Identity) you refer to here are pretty different, but I get your point.

I don't mind seeing a trope being re-used in films, if it's done in an interesting way, or if it surprises me. I was not aware of the premise or the ending of "Identity" going into it, and enjoyed it more because of it. I was told, repeatedly, about how good the twist in "The Sixth Sense" was and enjoyed it far less because of the hype and the buildup. I felt OBLIGATED to figure out the ending (which I did, without difficulty). That's why I don't read film reviews before seeing them...

well, maybe if I finished "Identity" I'd see the differences. About 45 minutes into it I was told the twist and so I naturally got pissed off and stopped watching it, but whenever it gets on HBO (which it probably is) Ill give it a look.

Speaking of schizo, you found Megga-man, but he seems to have skeedaddled when I came in the room. Could someone please go get him?

I've mentioned this elsewhwere, and I don't want to ruin anything for those who haven't seen it or love it, but before it became common knowledge, I knew WHODUNIT in "The Usual Suspects" in the first five minutes of my first viewing. It's very easy to identify someone's voice, thus killing any "mystery" the film may have had otherwise. Sorry.
