Next Stop, Greenwich Village (Paul Mazursky, 1976, Grade: A-)
This film is available on Blockbuster Online! That means it should be available to Netflix too!
Mazursky rivaled Woody Allen as a New York-based, Jewish pseudo-intellectual who ended up in Hollywood and spent much of his career filming it. This is Mazursky's most autobiographical, and also easily, his best film. Lenny Baker plays the Mazursky role in a tour de force performance. Lenny Baker truly gives a career-defining performance in this film, yet somehow, reality wasn't kind to him. Lenny Baker died very young from a brain tumor, but he was unbelieveably awesome in this, one of the best films of the '70s. However, film is always kind to the great ones, so Lenny Baker's light will always shine here. Shelley Winters, who had already won two Oscars earlier, gives her greatest performance as Lenny's mom in this terrific love poem to Greenwich Village c. 1953. The film is crammed with great performances, from Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, Antonio Fargas, Ellen Greene, Lois Smith, Dori Brenner, right down to the tiniest contributors.
Anybody who loves Woody Allen, film, acting, history, etc., has to love this transplendent film. It was awesome 31 years ago, and it's only more awesome today. I personally believe it to be superior to Annie Hall.

Okay, I didn't read this entire thread so I apologize if this has been said already. I know that it won an Oscar, but how many people have seen "Life is Beautiful"? It was a really moving film and it's guaranteed to soften up the girlfriend. Great chick flick thats entertaining for guys too.
