I think disney is making a good decision by making a sequal to Pirates of the Caribbean. I like the movie but I think it could be even better and I think POTC2 will be better than the original. Shrek2 was a great sequal. Dodgeball, although funny probably doesn't need a sequal. American Pie movies hurt a litte bit by the third.
Exorcist 2 is possibly the worst sequel, although I think Exorcist 3 was great. I don't think they need to be making a fourth though! Empire Strikes Back is a fantastic sequel, but episodes 1-3 did not need to be made. Conan the Destroyer was an awful sequel, and hopefully they won't do another until Arnie is ready to play old King Conan. I'd prefer new blood for a new Conan, but if Milius and Arnie get together for a closing chapter it would finish it nicely, and then someone else could pick up the reigns. Aliens and Terminator 2 were great sequels by John Cameron. Alien 3 was disappointing but I quite liked Alien Resurrection. The Paradise Lost documentary was amazingly chilling, but the follow-up was lacking, I think number 3 which is set for 2006 holds promise as Damian is scheduled for execution soon and that should make it as haunting as the first. By the way if you have not seen the first movie or read the book, I highly recommend them. I thought X2 was better than X-Men, and I am sure that Spider Man 2 will be even better as well. I think a POTC sequel will be great fun, hopefully Keith Richards signs on to play Johnny Depp's father! And you know, wouldn't it be great to see a sequel to the Passion of the Christ?! Just Kidding!

In truth, I don't believe good films, let alone great ones, merit ANY sequels unless they're based on something literary. For example, none of the LOTR films or novels were sequels; they were all just part of something really huge that had to be broken up.
I will admit that I enjoyed "Godfather II", "The Empire Strikes Back", "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom", "Aliens", "Terminator 2", and especially "French Connection II." This last film may violate several theories, since the first film was based on actual characters and not one thing that happened in the sequel actually happened in real life. Oh well, since I agree with Steve Martin in "Grand Canyon", that all of life's riddles are solved in the movies, I guess that makes "F.C. II" even better. I will say that Gene Hackman's acting in numero dos was probably 10 times better than his Academy-Award-winning job in numero uno.

I don't know ... I think a totally film-based duology (?) or trilogy or even tetralogy is okay as long as the story is planned out in advance, and not tacked on as an afterthought. Unfortunatley, that rarely happens in the film world as sequels are only granted if enough money is made.

This was a fun topic, so I am going to revisit it, even though there are obviously some people here that have some issues. By that I mean gay issues. By that I mean gay sex with donkey issues. By that I mean Jackietheblade putting on a donkey show in Tijuana issues. ANYHOO! Here are some more sequels.

Gee. I thought this used to be a legit thread. Oh well, it was dead for two weeks, so maybe this is where it had to go. Try to keep it funny without getting TOO tasteless. I just don't want to see any personal harangues from our jakal/Jackie tag team. [Grandpa walks back into his room, scratches his butt and channel-surfs.]

I always thought that Rounders could be made into a sequel, what with all the poker hoppla going on, meaning the fat bastard that won 5,000,000 at the 2004 WSOP, D-Zam.

GF's one and two actually were based on the same novel, broken up into two movies. That's why they're so cohesive, and why GF3 is so disjointed.
