On 12/12 I stopped by my local Best Buy and picked up the widescreen edition of "Bourne Ultimatum." I loved the movie when I saw it in the theater and it was definitely a must-have DVD. Toward the end of the movie when the bad CIA guys chase Bourne and Landy into the training building, the DVD froze. If I fast forwarded it would skip about 5 minutes of the movie and resume playing. BTW, it is the most important 5 minutes of the movie. I tried another DVD player and had the same problem at the same spot. The DVD was physically perfect as I had opened the package and placed it straight into the player. Today I exchanged the DVD at the same Best Buy and tried again. Guess what? Same problem in the same exact spot. Somewhat upset at this point at having to go back to Best Buy again, I went back to Best Buy and had them play the DVD in their equipment. Same problem in the same spot. They went and grabbed another copy of the same DVD, opened it in front of me and played it. Exact same problem in the exact same place. The Best Buy manager did not want to follow my suggestion that we try every copy he had in stock until we found one that worked. He refunded my money instead.
I can only offer two possiblities for what happened. Either my local Best Buy is selling defective bootleg copies of "Bourne Ultimatum" (not too likely) or Universal has a big batch of defective DVDs that they produced and are now being sold through retailers. Either way, if my experience is any guide, there are going to be a lot of unhappy purchasers of the new "Bourne Ultimatum" DVD.

I had bought the 4-disk Ultimate Jason Bourne package from COSTCO. When I played the Bourne Ultimatum, it hung at the end of Chapter 14. It just hung there! I went to Scenes to Chapter 15--stuck there. It finally moved but skipped the 5-minutes you talked about. I returned it and bought the single WS disk, since they were out of the Ultimate package. Then, I was astounded that the same thing happened to me again! I noticed that the spindle area was off-color. Anyway, I don't think we're alone. Universal needs to do something about this. When you pay approx $21 for a dvd, you'd expect it to play w/o defects.
