This is not good Platypus...First you defy Little Miss Sunshine...then you claim that this ending is no good...what's next? You gonna say that you hate Finding Nemo?
I thought the ending to The Departed was fine, honestly. I'm not sure how else it could have ended and not been cliche, really.
It's an obvious choice, but how can you deny the ending of The Usual Suspects?
Another movie that I really like the end of is Mystic River. It kind of seems like a deus ex machina for a second, then after you think about it, it starts to make sense. I especially like the part when Penn's character says, "I'm glad you found my daughter's killer. I just wish you'd been a little faster."

of movies to come out recently, I thought Children of Men had a great ending. Little Miss Sunshine's was hilarious. Godfather part 1 was perfect. Taegukgi hwinalrimyeo (koren war movie) had a heart-wrenching ending, which sticks with me to this day. Speaking of war movies, Full Metal Jacket was another great ending. On the Kubrick trail, might as well put 2001 Space Odyssey on the list as well. Sentimental favorite: braveheart .. it hurts to admit that

However, I master the trick just like Nixon Causin terror, quick damage ya whole era
Brainstorm (1983). Natalie Wood's last month (she drowned during production).
Premonition (2007).
Sliding Doors (1998).
Slip Stream (2007).
A Beautiful Mind (2001).
The Sixth Sense (1999).
Being John Malkovich (2000) has one of the more unusual endings.
The Matador (2005).
Twelve Monkeys (1996).
The Cooler (2003). A truly satisfying ending without really having twist as such.
The Crying Game (1993).
The Usual Suspects (1995).
Brazil (1985), not the televised version which was probably one of the most edited versions in movie history.
Carnival of Souls (1962).
Dogville (2004).
Doctor Zhivago (1965).
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). While there really isn't any particular twist to this movie, it's just that the ending after experiencing the whole movie back in 1968 resulted in such an amazing emotional catharsis at the time.
Atonement (2007).

deppseapirate Slacker Posted 29 January 2009 04:19 PM I loved the end of the movie Wanted. It just had an awesome ending line. Perfect for the whole overall attitude of the movie.
The final scenes had that deep twist/shock value along with a resolution that spun around from the beginning scene to the end scene. Angelina Jolie must have loved how it ended for her, it seems to suit her publically advertised personality and value system.

The Matrix (1999) - Neo steps out of a telephone booth in epic motion while Rage Against The Machine's "Wake Up" plays in the background.
Batman Begins (2005) - The Joker card given to Batman at the end was a dead giveaway at who's the next villian. I couldn't have been more excited for a sequel.
There are so many that either blindsided me or left a perfect impression, but here goes:
"Heat" by Michael Mann "Gladiator" by Ridley Scott "Tequila Sunrise" "Deliverance" "It's a Wonderful Life" "Chinatown" "Pulp Fiction" "Kiss Me Deadly" "Memento" "Miracle Mile" "The Outlaw Josey Wales" "Collateral" by Michael Mann "L.A. Confidential" "Fail Safe" by Sidney Lumet "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly" "Casablanca" "The Searchers" "Angel Heart" "The Thing" by John Carpenter "Vertigo" "Moonstruck" "The Birds"

janey815 Slacker First Class Posted 13 April 2009 11:42 AM Hide Post the ones with the end twists are the best
I can't agree with you on the notion that the movies with "end twists" are necessarily the best/favorite movie endings though the ones that twist do have that shock, surprise, and climatic punch effect that certainly help their endings. For some immensely emotionally satisfying and truly quality movies, endings can be more an insightful resolution or climatic built up scene that satisfies on the basis of tying everything together or just simply allows the audience to bask in the ending experience of a good movie well done. From my earlier list I would include such movies as:
My Date with Drew (2004). TheGreat Escape (1963). Fate is the Hunter (1964). Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977). Brainstorm (1983). Sliding Doors (1998). Doctor Zhivago (1965).
