We all know that Titanic, the movie we all love to hate is the current box office champion of all times (not including adjustments for inflation) at a mind-boggling $600 million (1997). Funnily, it doesn't rank in IMdb's top 250! It rates only a 7. I think it's a much better movie than that, personally. Anyways, what got me thinking of Titanic was all the recent hype of how King Kong was going to challenge Titanic's box office gross, and look how it has fared..Looks like doing perhaps $250 mil - $275 mil at the most.. What made Titanic the box-office juggernaut? I remember that it didn't really have a monstrous opening weekend, but just held steady at 20-30 mil weekends for a long, long time.. Is there an upcoming movie that might challenge Titanic's record in the next few years? In the age of satellite/cable/DVD's, I doubt if this will be broken for a long, long time..
cheers

Teenage girls made it a juggernaut. Personally, I think it is worse than the 7.1 rating. I never thought King Kong would realistically challenge it. I remember thinking at the time that Spider-Man might make a run. Of course, adjusted for inflation, I believe Gone With the Wind comes in at about 1.3b. As far as what might challenge, you can never tell. If something comes along at the right time with the right story, it could definitely rival it.
