I watched Beowulf last night. It was just ehh...VERY VERY greusome. The effects were very Shrek-like...and fake..so it made the bodies ripping apart not so bad...but it was real enough where it was kinda bothersome.
I have been moving so have not been the regular attendee, and I am sad to say my return has not been exciting. I first took my wife to see "Fools Gold" because she liked the leading man. She agreed that it was a terrible movie. The only funny scene can be found in the trailer. It was then my turn so I chose 10 Million B.C. The best comment was from my wife, "Well, at least it had some thrills; not that many, but some." The only experience I we both enjoyed was the DVD "Across the Universe." I was not expecting much, but it was worth viewing. The story was slow, but the music moved you along. At times it was like watching a string of MTV videos strung together by a common storyline. Some scenes would make great videos apart from the film. The draft office scene was captivating. Still, regarding movies in 08, I can only hope they get better.
Boy, you got to carry that weight a long time!

Into the Wild I knew the gist of the story going in- the tale of Christopher McCandless and his fateful journey into Alaska. Emile Hirsch is excellent as McCandless aka Alex Supertramp, the name he takes on as he travels America. This is a great road picture with plenty of interesting characters and fine performances by the supporting cast. The story is told both in flashbacks and the "now" scenes of McCandless in Alaska, along with a narration by his sister (Jena Malone). Despite the flaws of the main character, the movie is essentially flawless, and director Sean Penn's masterpiece. Hirsch should have been nominated for and won the best actor award for his part. I would move this pic up to the 2nd spot in my '07 top ten list.

Across The Universe Love & chaos of the '60s set to Beatles songs. First half hour was fine but it went downhill quickly after that. The Janis & Jimi-like characters got on my nerves from the get-go. But I love watching Evan Rachel Wood, she's dynamite. Still, I recommend to rent Hair instead.

I saw The Eye on movieforumz. All I can say is I'm glad I didn't pay to see it in the theater.
I watched phantasm again for the first time in years it's still scary as H-E- double hockey sticks. I couldn't even bring my self to watch the second one

I wanted to see this movie soooo bad and some how didn't make it to the theater. I hate when that happens some movies have to be seen on the silver screen.
I just saw Kurt Cobain: About a Son. I read some online gripes about the style of this doc, specifically how it didn't show shots of Cobain (until the end), or the band members, or show any concert footage. Basically, the movie shows you the various places in the state of Washington where Cobain slept, hung out, went to school, ect., all the while listening to him talk about it in the form of taped interviews with music journalist Michael Azerrad.
I personally loved the style the filmmakers used to shoot this. I thought the visuals used in this film, along with the score, were haunting. My only gripe is my wanting it to last longer than it did. And I'm not even a big fan of Nirvana.
Babel Movie directed A.G. Inarritu taking place in three different countries and their connections across borders. It had its poignant moments, and anyone can relate to the film simply becuase I describes so many levels of society. I could not understand the relevance of one scene, but it did not take away from the story-telling. A-.

Atonement In 1935 England, 13 yr old Briony (Saoirse Ronan) brings false accusations against the boyfriend Robby (James McAvoy) of her sister Cecilia (Keira Knightley). Robby & Cecilia are seperated, and soon Briony has to come to grip with what she's done. The film looks great, acting is fantastic, there's an old Hollywood feel to it all but I felt cheated by the final act and ending. Still worth a rental.
The Brain from Planet Arous (1957) Here we go! Scientist Steve March (John Agar) visits Mystery Mountain to check on some strange radiation readings. While there, a giant floating mean-ass brain takes over his body! March's girlfriend Sally (Joyce Meadows) knows that Steve is "different" after his return. She & her pop visit Mystery Mountain where they meet a giant floating good-guy brain who wants to help capture/destroy the bad brain. Extremely fun grade-B film.

I liked The Squid and the Whale, but I wasn't crazy about Noah Baumbach's follow-up. My complaints about it were very similar to my t complaints about Wes Anderson's The Darjeeling Limited. When looked at in comparison to the director's previous work, it didn't tread any new territory. It's a quirky film about a dysfunctional family. Just like The Squid and the Whale. Except it doesn't feature the sweet Pink Floyd soundtrack.
C. Watchable, but not that enjoyable.
On a side note, does Jennifer Jason Leigh have a clause in her contract that requires nudity? I ask only because I don't think I've ever seen a Jennifer Jason Leigh film that didn't feature her in some state of undress. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I just find it an odd curiosity.

I watched the movie The Mist and as far as a Steven King movie it was good. But, the ending was bad in my mind. I would go further in detail but I do not want to ruin it for anybody although it pretty much was not good. The rest of the movie was good.

Cat Women of the Moon (1953) Not long after their rocket is hit by a meteor, some US space travellers land on the moon. There they discover a cave with oxygen, giant spiders and a city of women who want to take control of the rocket, leaving their dying city for Earth. Wacky grade-B flick that does have some fun though not as much as the somewhat similiar Queen of Outer Space.
All the Real Girls 2003 flick featuring Zooey Deschanel. She's returned from boarding school, and becomes the romantic attention of her brother's best friend, much to the brother's dislike (he knows his pal is screw 'em and run kinda guy). Slow paced romantic-drama but good acting all around, and um, Zooey Deschanel, so can't be all bad.

This was a movie I went into with NO CLUE as to what it was about. Okay. I had a tiny clue. I knew it was a story of revenge, but I had no idea how completely AWESOME this story was! I'm not saying it was a realistic approach to vigilante justice (there are some very predictible moments, as well as a few unbelieveable ones), but if you're looking for a good "street justice" type of flick, this one should fit the bill quite nicely! Very violent and bloody. I'm talkin' throats cut, heads blown to bits, legs getting blown off, holes bigger than bowling balls being blasted through folks... just fantastic fun for the whole family!
B+

Sure, I might offend a few of the blue-noses with my cocky stride and musky odor - oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called 'City Fathers' who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about what's to be done with this Monkey_Boy?!"

Starring George Gobel and Rita "Mrs.Tom Hanks" Wilson (in one of her earliest roles). Oh this is a real winner. Gangster-turned-informant is shot by a couple thugs and his body dumped in a shallow lake. A meteorite crashes into the lake and that somehow revives the dead crook who then is out for revenge as well as protecting the meteorite from local college kids who discover it. Stupid storyline (if you can call it that) and worse acting (if you can call it that) but fun cheese if you like this kind of stuff.

"Violence is one of the most fun things to watch." There could never be a more truer tag line for this movie. This has got to be one of my TOP 5 ACTION MOVIES OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!! It has everything that makes an action movie fantastic! I looked like this: for most of the movie! It was that kinda experience for me. Don't pop this in expecting any kind of a plot. If you've ever been confused by a plotline, this one will probably top them all! I mean, there are some bad guys who want to kill a baby and Clive Owen is protecting it by doing some crazy crap. That's probably the only part you'll have understood by the time the credits roll. But the plot isn't important in this movie. It moves too fast for you to really think about it! Just when a question pops into your head -BLAM!- somebody dies... horribly! This really is a "turn off your brain and enjoy" kinda flick. One so fantastic I almost watched it twice in a row when the wife came down and asked what I had been watchin' that shook the living room floor! But it was waaaaay passed my bedtime, so...
